A new unit of measure

IronDuke

Ancient Mariner
A now infamous incident has spawned a new unit of measure. Some explanation is necessary.
As some of you know, it was I who introduced LooseCannon to Maiden while we were still in High School. One time, early on, we were driving from his house to mine via the 102 (our version of the Interstate or Autobahn). As I was getting on the On Ramp, I happened to insert one of my mixed Maiden CDs. The first song was the standard album version of Fear of the Dark. By the time the song ended, we were pulling off the highway.
This was no small feat. The song’s duration was 7:12, and the journey from on-ramp to off-ramp is about 16 kilometres. This gave us an average speed of 130 km/h in an area where the limit is 110 and most people go about 100. To make things worse, due to the intensity of the guitar solo, I remember the car climbing up to at least 160 km/h at more than one point.
It was completely unintentional. The song was just so intense that we both didn’t realise how recklessly stupid we were being (and we were both 17 at the time….may have had something to do with it).
But now, any trip LooseCannon and I have since taken has been measured in “Fear of the Darks”
One Fear of the Dark is thus defined as: The distance able to be travelled in 7 min, 13 sec. The size of one Fear of the Dark, of course, varies depending on the terrain and method of transportation.
When hiking in the woods, for example, one Fear of the Dark might be as small as 1km. When flying on the Concord, a Fear of the Dark is hundreds of kms.

So from now on, measure all journies in Fear of the Darks.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only nut who does this. Not just with Maiden songs but with whatever is in my car's cd player. It is part of my minor OCD. When I get in my car a song has to start and it or any song currently playing has to end before I get out. Gives me a sense of completion... weird I know.

For years, I've occasionally measure time in ROTAMs, which conveniently convert to approximately 4 ROTAMs per hour.

Hmm, so a FOTD is the distance that can be travelled in 7:13? That's about how long it takes me to smoke one cigarette, and I've always measure walking distance in cigarettes. For example, from my house to the Mexican restaurant down the road is a 2-cigarette walk. However, this can be deceptive, as I average 10 minutes of smokeless walking between cigarettes - so a 2-cigarette walk is 7:13 + 10:00 + 7:13 = 24:26, or slightly more than 3 FOTDs.

"Fancy going to the bar Duke?"

"Sure, how long will it take you to be at my place?"

"A fear of the dark and a half?"

I believe you have made a technical error, 7th Son. A FOTD is a unit of distance, not time:

The unit of time in the Iron Maiden System Of Measurement is a ROTAM.

Weight is measured against the weight of a vinyl single and its CD companion. The general choice here is Angel and the Gambler, for the reason that it's the longest single ever.

In Eddie-Heads. Of course, one needs to own that box set (or at least the case) to perform accurate measurements.

By Iron Maiden right? since Blind Guardian released ...and then there was silence as a single and it's ooooh... over 14 min long.

Onhell, you may be taking things a bit too literally. Sure, TAATG is not the longest single ever in terms of chronological duration. However, in terms of psychological time, the full-length TAATG is the longest single ever. It never seems to end. I don't call it "The Angel And The Never-Ending Choruses" for nothing.
