Maidenfans Best Albums of the Millennium: 2007

A lot of good stuff from this year. Easy votes for Nightwish, Symphony X and Gamma Ray. Also voting for Megadeth - it may not be that strong overall, but there are some good tunes on it. Finally, a vote for Iced Earth. Again, not their best by a long shot, but good enough that it certainly...

NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING - Your thoughts…

It's the exact opposite for me - I love that the rhythm guitar(s) are doing something different in certain songs, and it makes the solo sections a lot more interesting. They certainly never sounded random to me. I'd argue that it's "easier", harmonically, to solo over some simple chords, and...

Maidenfans Best Albums of the Millennium: 2005

Not expecting it to do well here, but I'll definitely encourage spinning Crush the Insects to anyone who likes a slice of doom (traditional doom - if you expect epic doom in the vein of Candlemass, you'll be slightly disappointed). Of the three albums Reverend Bizarre made, it's their most...

BLACK SABBATH DISCOGRAPHY RANKING GAME: #11 REVEALED

Yes, the cover sucks. Yes, the production is horrendous. The songs are mostly fine - side A with "Trashed", "Zero the Hero" and my personal favourite "Disturbing the Priest" is definitely stronger than side B. "Digital Bitch" is easily the worst song, while the title track shows promise, but...

Maidenfans Best Albums of the Millennium: 2003 FINAL ROUND

Well... Objectively you're quite right. There are probably better albums in this vein out there. But it was my pick for purely nostalgic reasons - when we bought our house some years ago, I basically had this album on repeat. Moving, renovating, tearing down wallpapers, painting, putting in new...

    Bruce Dickinson

Just had a listen to the new BTP, and I really think the new versions of "Gods of War" "1000 Points of Light", "Laughing in the Hiding Bush" and "Change of Heart" are great. Especially "Gods of War" seems to finally have become the song it was meant to be. As for the rest, I still prefer them in...

I actually like his voice too. The guitarist (forgot his name), on the other hand, should never have been allowed to open his mouth while recording. They have a few good songs, but mostly I find little of interest in their music.

BLACK SABBATH DISCOGRAPHY RANKING GAME: #11 REVEALED

And that is the sole reason I ranked it dead last, and I stand by that decision.

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

Many good songs in this round. Voting: Dan Swanö Alter Bridge Death (Warzone is great and a reminder that I need to listen to more Armored Saint, but I'm going with the tune that I'm the most familiar with) Kamelot Myrath (tough choice though) Manowar

Which Maiden studio album has the best guitar sound in your opinion?

Sure, it definitely makes it stand out from the other albums. I just don't think it's that good a sound.

    Black Sabbath

Toss out "The Illusion of Power", which is the only song here I actively dislike, for "Loser Gets It All" and Forbidden would be a better, though still very much sub-par album. "Kiss of Death" is my favourite and the only true A-tier song here, but I do enjoy "Guilty as Hell" too (the riff is...

Which Maiden studio album has the best guitar sound in your opinion?

Powerslave, Brave New World, Piece of Mind, probably in that order. Surprised that so many dislike PoM; I love how heavy songs like Where Eagles Dare, Revelations and Icarus sounds here. Also a bit baffled at the love for Somewhere in Time. A little reverb is good, but here there's just too much.

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

Easy choices this time. Purple, Sabbath x2, Dokken, The Who, Metallica.

    Black Sabbath

Headless Cross is a fantastic record. Probably my third favourite album of theirs, only topped by Paranoid and Sabotage. Obviously so, so different from the Ozzy years and with much more in common with the Dio albums - I like to think it takes everything that made Heaven and Hell and The Mob...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

I did not like "I Am" as much this time as when it previously was up in this game, though it's still decent enough. But I do think Priest has the better song overall here. "King for A Day" is horrible, but at least it's not Mötley Crüe, and for that reason alone I'm voting Pierce the Veil (not...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

"Mr. Brownstone" was never more than an average GN'R tune. "Midnight Sun" is kinda messy, but much more my thing. Helloween. The title track to Rust in Peace is strangely enough one of the weakest tracks on the album, while "Man on the Silver Mountain" is a flawless masterpiece. Rainbow. I...

    Bruce's Singing

I thought it had long been established that the video and album for LAD comes from two different nights.

    Nightwish

Listened for the first time last night. Not blown away (yet), but it's definitely much better than Human/Nature. The mixing is a bit weird when it comes to the vocals; they are really muffled. Floor sounds good though. Troy's voice does absolutely nothing for me, and Marko is obviously missed...

METALLICA ALBUM RANKING GAME: FINAL LIST

I think I had probably only listened to Hardwired and 72 Seasons once each in their entirety since their respective releases, so I went and gave them both a full spin again before making the ranking. I did enjoy 72 Seasons the most, though it isn't saying a lot. Hardwired has higher highs, but...
