Reflecting on 2015 as a Maiden fan

2015 was definitely a year of up's and down's for Maiden fans. Firstly and most importantly of course was Bruce's recovery; I mean, look at the end of the year and beginning of this, that same awful disease took Lemmy and David Bowie. Touring really does seem to be Maiden's stronghold - I love...

    Blaze Bayley, good or bad?

Definitely not, the sound conjured up on the last few is definitely not the best sound to be displaying the band in. On the topic of Mr. Bayley, he has a great voice. I loved him in Wolfsbane, and I think his voice definitely suited the darker X Factor material. The songwriting on both X...

No Prayer for the Dying could have been Amazing

Everyone has different tastes, this thread exemplifies that; for me 'The Assasin' is absolutely awful. A silly song with a very juvenile chorus, how did Iron Maiden listen back to this track and think it was a great one to release?^ NPFTD does include some decent stuff, but overall, it's a very...

The Book of Souls: General album discussion

Would agree somewhat; however, I think TBOS is one of the better albums of the reunion. 'Brave New World' I would probably rate as the most enjoayble, with AMOLAD being the poorest in my opinion. TBOS is a good album, far too long of course without the musical ideas or creativity to justify the...

    Empire Of The Clouds

Still one of my least liked from TBOS - I admire the idea, the musical thought and the audacity of it, but the execution is just rather mundane. The idea is there though, and as the 18+ minutes is just repetition of the main motif, you could cut 2/3's of it and still have everything you need in...

The Book of Souls: General album discussion

point taken, and as an avid music fan for a few decades, of course there are albums where the listener does need to put in effort. if all art or music was immediate there would be much less pleasure in discovering the gems over time, the slow burners. in my case it just comes down to taste...

Why A Matter Of Life and Death is Iron Maidens best album

good points on the loudness wars mindlesspieces; and most artists are stricken with the distorted sound when played loud. your main point is how i would also feel; fans of a well established band having polar opposite opinions on albums and tracks. the final frontier a prime example as you...

    The Red And The Black

I have seen other posters mention the unison guitar and vocal parts, however, I like that aspect of the track. I think the arrangement is a bit off in respect of repeated sections, but the basic creative ideas are good. It is one of the divisive tracks on the album, I'm in the camp that rates it...

Did any of the songs from The Book Of Souls enter your top 10 maiden songs list?

No, while the album as a whole I feel is better than the last three records, it's not a great album in my opinion. Some very good tracks, but none i would place near maidens peak tracks. The only song of the modern era I would include would be The Wicker Man, Blood Brothers would be up there also.

    When The River Runs Deep

I'd agree - wtrrd is one of my favorites also. It's got one of the best riffs they've written in years, very 80s sounding. I like the half speed of the chorus also; the vocals do grate a little but not enough to take away from the full performance. In the live arena, I think this would be a...

The Book of Souls: General album discussion

You don't think TRATB is repetitive? I do think it's one of the albums best cuts but honestly feel it's a great 6 minute track extended to 13 minutes. There's a lot of discussion on this on the thread about this song and many have mentioned how instead of differing musical ideas it's simply...

    The Great Unknown

This for me is one of the surprises on the album. Initially I hadn't given it much thought but on subsequent listens it does stand out more. Bruce doesn't strain as he did on TFF though his vocals in general still can be quite difficult to listen to when he tries for the higher register...

Why A Matter Of Life and Death is Iron Maidens best album

Fair points but it just proves musics subjectivity. Your top 3 albums would perhaps be my lower rated 3. AMOLAD for me is fairly mundane and I have tried over the years to give it more listens but I don't find much there of real quality. I stand by the point on the mixing. Turning up the...

    The Red And The Black

this is one of the best tracks on the album; good musical ideas, and the transitions between sections not as awkward as other maiden transitions can be. what lets it down is - again - lenght for lenghts sake. if there were genuinely good musical ideas to sustain its running time, this would have...

    Speed Of Light

not a great song by any means; a rather by-the-numbers riff, however, it does have a good chorus. a better track than the previous albums` opening single for sure. a decent maiden track then; not up to their earlier standards, and not as captivating as "the wicker man" for example, but decent...

Why A Matter Of Life and Death is Iron Maidens best album

absolutely agreed; i cannot fathom how this album is considered a masterpiece. the same problems seem to pop up again and again with the latter day maiden material - the production, the repetition (chorus retardation as maidenslave refers to on his youtube maiden reviews), and most of all, the...

The Book of Souls: General album discussion

its a hard one to understand; no offence meant here, but how can you refer to it as a "great" album whilst skipping half or a third of it?? i think "revolver" by the beatles is a great album, the jimi hendrix experience is a great album, the stones "beggars banquet" is great, etc..etc; i do...
