I'm not a drummer but maybe you are thinking of Nicko's infatuation with ride cymbals? Also I think he tuned his drums quite high. I quite like Simon's more muscular sound and think that Nicko at times sounded too weak and tinny live, but of course it is subjective

Same with RiR version of Wicker Man, it just roars. A shame that they seem to have gone for a less heavy rythm guitar tone after that (or put Adrian lower in the mix)

Well Live After Death has always been overrated. Beast over Hammersmith is better, as is Rock in Rio (the band at it's peak?)

Playing songs slightly slower is a good thing and not necessarily a symptom of age. With Dawson's steadiness and fat drum sound I'd say some songs, especially Rime and SSOASS, sound as good live as they ever have.

I'd say Bruce still sounds great for his age, even more so last summer when he did a solo tour. That being said, the lisp and lack of enunciation; this is a symptom of his cancer treatment right? Unfortunately it seems to have become more pronounced lately.

A Matter of Life and Death for sure. 3 amazing tracks (BTATS, LD, LoL). Otherwise it plods and sounds too much like the X-factor production-wise (great drum sound, the rest sounds flat and weak)

Agreed! But also the bite and crunch on the rythm is something else - the intro riff to Montsegur sounds blistering and the heavy section of the Paschendale intro is like being bombarded in the best of ways. But anyhow, I digress :)

I'd say it sounds more organic than DoD and especially the drums sound great. Otherwise IMO DoD has better production if you can get past the mastering - the guitar sound is among the heaviest and best in their discography.

Indeed, Harris is such a perfectionist that we got the famously well-produced X-factor and Virtual XI, a draft or concept version of the dance of death cover used on the retail edition and a rough mix or master used for AMOLAD. /S But seriously, I'm sure the band has integrity enough to say...

Amen. The theme of a power ballad should be love/heartbreak or something emotional. Heaven by Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi's Always, Whitesnake, Poison, Skid Row, Alone by Heart, Dokken and so on. IMO some Maiden songs that people refer to as power ballads are either to melancholy/folky or surreal...

Bump! Not every melodic song with undistorted guitar is a power ballad. To me, power ballads are songs like Still in Love With You, Love ain't no Stranger, Bed of Roses etc. In that case Wasting Love is the only one that comes to mind
