Thanks to Matic for these corrections :)

1959 Fender Precision, maple body, rosewood...
Anything's possible. I will just say that I've never had the feeling he was a neck swapping kinda guy (like David Gilmour :D ). I know H did on his first Jackson, so you could be right of course :)
So a small update to the list :)

Steve seems to have had the white one with rosewood fretboard since (at least) 1980.
This photo from Infinite Dreams states Reading 1980.
Also found these 2 from Google.
I always liked Dave's Jacksons
Weird lighting on Steve's bass. It almost looks black. I'm sure there are hints of blue in there, so it has to be the hero bass in lake placid blue sparkle. :D
So i n terms of a rough chronology....

Yes. It does look a bit filtered.....
I'm sure there used to be pics of an open air show where he played this. And I'm sure Steve played a white bass (if I'm remembering correctly).
Been looking to find those pics again a for ages.
Thanks for the reply. Even though I've been playing guitar for 35 years, I'm still learning about these things
Infinite Dreams is a favourite. I should definitely try that intro on the neck pickup
Not going to argue with you, you seem to be the guru here on this topic
But I will just say that the SD/ PAF combo sound perfect through my JMP1/ Lexicon rig
