What kind of new release from Iron Maiden would you really, really want?

I think he sounds pretty good on the live tracks that were on Best of the B-Sides. And the Evil that Men Do live version with him isn’t that bad. I know it’s not gonna happen but I would really like a properly produced live album with Blaze. But even more than that I want a new studio album...

How did you feel when the reunion was announced in 1999?

Yeah, I was into Maiden already around the time Bruce left. I remember hearing about his departure, then Blaze being announced as the replacement. Had no idea who he was. But then the Man On the Edge single came out, with Judgement Day, Justice of the Peace and (I think) The Edge of Darkness as...

    The Edge of Darkness

One of my all-time favorite Maiden songs. Blaze is really good here. The verse that starts with ”Every minute I get weaker...” sounds amazing, there’s some much power in the delivery. Bonus points for the really unusual short harmony part in the middle of the great solo(s). Solid 10.

    The Angel and the Gambler

TAATG has always sounded like a The Who pastische to me. Problem is, most The Who songs aren’t 10 minutes long, and there is a reason. This one should have been Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Solo, Chorus. That’s it. And it shouldn’t have been a single.

Should the X Factor have been a double album?

In my opinion: No. In fact I think The X-Factor should have been trimmed, some b-sides included and a couple of songs cut from the album. I just can’t understand why Judgement Day and Justice of the Peace didn’t make it. While I like all the songs, there are just too many similar tracks with a...

    Martin Birch - the master

SIT is "saved" by having a very healthy and dry drum sound, without the typical over-the-top 80's snare reverb, for example. So while the guitars have that chorusy sound, the rhythm section is actually very dry and natural sounding and tight as hell. Nicko's playing on that album is just out of...

Why did Steve Harris fire Clive Burr ?

Nicko's playing is one of the main things that makes Maiden unique. Most metal drummers play very straightforward. They can be fast and technical, but they still pretty much stick to a straight beat with very little variation. Nicko is not like that. I'm not saying he is the absolute best...

    Blaze touring issues?

Yeah, that's probably right. And there was most likely also a conscious choice to go in a different direction - to move away from the operatic "spandex metal" 80's sound and trying to sound fresh with a different type of singer. Not saying it was the right choice...

    2015 Remasters on CD

Overall I like the remasters, but SIT just doesn't sound right. The guitars are too loud (reminiscent of the post-reunion albums), and the sound is just all over the place. SAD. The original is one my all time favorite sounding albums. Don't get the hate for The X-Factor at all. I admit it...

    Blaze touring issues?

Here's my take on the issue: I've heard clips of Blaze doing a good or at least OK job on most Bruce era songs. His problem was consistency. Being forced to sing out of one's natural register night after night is hell on the vocal chords, and the X-Factour and VXI tour had a very busy schedule...

How did you feel when the reunion was announced in 1999?

Well, I won't argue with that. A lot of people really seem to like Blood Brothers. I was just stating my feelings towards BNW.

How did you feel when the reunion was announced in 1999?

I was 16 when Virtual XI came out, and I listened to the album quite a bit. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but those were some really good years in my life, so I always associate Virtual XI with all the good things that happen when you're 16 and life is good. Had no problem with the album and still...
