"Becoming" is just mindless chugging and Phil Anselmo mindlessly doing his annoying tough guy routine. There's way too much Pantera in this game for my taste. "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow" has very mediocre vocals, but the music is awesome - I love the tempo shift and the solos. Easy win for...
Myrath may have toned down the progressiveness on recent albums, but "Wide Shut" is so full of twists and turns that I love every second of it. It almost feels like it's twice as long, yet it never once outstays its welcome. I really liked "Vermillion Moons" as well, and I actually think Arch...
So, this was pretty much a "filler" round for me. Aside from one very pleasant surprise, and one downright terrible little piece of music (pun intended), I didn't really care for the rest.
And that applies to the first match already - neither song was particularly good, but I'll toss my vote to...
With the second part added, it makes a lot of sense, and I like the duality of the phrase. On its own, I just think "Saturday Satan" sounds very silly.
"White Pearl, Black Oceans" started off slow, but once it got itself going it was really good and enjoyable. "Saturday Satan" was perfectly fine as well, but I didn't find it nearly as memorable (hilariously bad title aside). Voting for Sonata Arctica.
If we look past the undeniable influence...
Give their second album, Nightfall, a spin while you're at it - the replaced the original vocalist with Messiah Marcolin for this one, who many regard as the "ultimate" Candlemass singer. Musically, I think the album is just as strong as their debut.
And if you want to check out what they...
Managed a quick listen and write-up while on the train.
Easy vote for one of the best songs on my favourite Manowar album. The Riot song was fine, but nothing more.
Neither song in the second match was impressive, but they each had some redeeming qualities at least. I liked the one from...
I mostly know them because of the singer, Robert Lowe, who sang on three Candlemass albums as well. I love his voice, and I think "Scent of Death" is one of his finest moments.
They also did a cover of Hallowed, which is pretty good.
I sadly missed this round, and I can't promise I'll do the next one either as I'm mostly away until Sunday, but my votes would probably have gone to Warlord, Bolt Thrower, Sanctuary, Amon Amarth and Solitude Aeturnus this time. I'm unsure about the last match.
Following a very weak round, this one sure is breath of fresh air; lots of very good stuff here.
I really enjoyed both Yngwie and Manilla Road's songs in the first match. I don't think the guitar sound on "On the Run Again" is particularly good, but on the other hand, the singer from Manilla...
Forget what I said about the previous round - THIS is by far the weakest yet.
Aerosmith over Kiss - "Rats in the Cellar" is just so much more fun and enjoyable than "God of Thunder".
Cinderella over Lita Ford - "Gypsy Road" is quite underwhelming and mediocre, but "Kiss Me Deadly" is downright...
I'll chime in with a "weakest round so far" and a shorter write-up this time.
"Tower" is a strange piece of synth worship, but that also makes it much more interesting than "Riff Raff", which is just... AC/DC. Also, bonus point to Angel for the Dio-like lyrics. Angel.
The second match is the...
"Atomic War" was an incredibly fun listen - the energy of Motörhead and a singer that kinda sounded like Eric Adams turned out to be a great combo. The Venom track was quite bad. Crossfire.
I liked a few bits in "Carolina IV", but it felt more like a bunch of ideas thrown together than an...
Don't worry, I'm absolutely going for strike three next round! (Hey, I did like the Meat Loaf-track, doesn't that count for something?)
I gave it another listen, and my verdict stays the same: it's heavy for sure, and I won't call it a bad song, but it's just not that interesting either. The...
"Postmortem" is one of my favourite Slayer songs; I love the riffing and the overall groove. "Dead Embryonic Cells" is neither the the best nor the worst I've heard from Sepultura, but it doesn't matter anyway - easy vote for Slayer.
I don't find Redeemer of Souls that memorable, and "Battle...
I don't care much for neither Ozzy's solo career nor Queensrÿche, but I enjoy both songs in the first round. I think the music is equally great on both, so it comes down to the vocals - Tate isn't nearly as annoying as usual on "Deliverance", while Ozzy sounds a bit mechanical on "You Can't Kill...
I get where you're coming from, but I disagree. I guess it's the overall feel - it doesn't matter if they're clean or heavy, slow or fast, all their songs just sound so similar to me. "Aerials" could easily flow right into "Toxicity", and I wouldn't notice. On the positive side, it means that...
