Here's a couple of useful articles. The first is from 1995 but gives a good breakdown of the percentages. I'd imagine the artist cut is less today especially for non-established artists. If Rod Stewart was only raking in 16% in 1995, there's not a chance Iron Maiden is making over that today...
As far as the US is concerned, since 1999 the median inflation adjusted income is down about 10% and student loan debt is up 500%. There have been several cuts made in peoples' everyday lives due to lack of discretionary income. I don't know the average age of people buying music over the years...
