It's the lineup that's done the most albums, so I suppose yes.
Otherwise the most classic lineup in the true sense of the word would be the lineup on the first album...
I do remember Steve saying in to bio that SSOASS sold somewhat less in the US than SIT, but was very sucessfull in Europe. Artistically though, it's surely one of their greatest triumphs, regardless.
Fear Of The Dark remains one of the most successful Maiden albums, in terms of sold units, yes. I also happen to really like the album. It's diverse and I like the sound, which is very "studio" which I prefer on studio albums.
I'm pretty sure NPFTD's reputation suffers a bit from the fact that it followed the mighty SSOASS. Had it been released between Killers and TNOTB, it would probably be regarded as an early classic.
No Prayer has a rather weak sound, and Gers plays horribly on it, especially solo-wise. I do like some song on it, but it halso have quite a lot of songs I don't care much for.
Fear Of The Dark is great, even if Gers is still finding his way around playing solos. I don't really get why...
It's a damn pop rock song, I don't want that from Maiden. If I want that kind of music, there are many bands that do it better.... The Trooper is at least pure metal, even when butchered by Blaze!
Pretty much anything 82 up until midway through the World Slavery Tour when he blew his voice, that was pure magic and he never came close again after that, live. He's usually still OK, but he'll never be as incredibly powerful and METAL again as on Rock In Rio 85 or Beast over Hammersmith from...
I just realised how much Steve Harris cares. I read in the bio today that he thought it was a blessing they cut down on the touring in 2003 (Maiden). And now he's out touring with BL.
I don't quite get the logic of first saying Maiden must do less touring (fewer shows, bigger venues), then...
