How so? With that scoreline, Costa Rica were at 3 points and Spain at 4. Spain out would've required either Germany to win by 8 goals, or CR to win. At 2-1 Costa Rica, Spain were out, but that didn't last very long.

Agree, but the tournament format does give them one more chance to show what they're capable of. If the first two games are representative, they will get destroyed by Croatia.

Given the current situation and who they're playing, I'd consider both as surprises. Germany need to win against Costa Rica and that's a 90% in my book. They do need Spain avoiding defeat against Japan, but that's another 90% (or more). So let's multiply those probabilities and we get 81% chance...
