I think this sums it up. Between 1/2 of the new album being played every tour, and a predictable selection of 'mandatory cuts' like IM, NOTB, Trooper , there isn't much real estate left for the band to introduce too many surprises. Plus the band obviously loves set list stability and not...
I think it's important to note that, while Maiden are incredibly successful, their career has been a marathon and not a sprint. Even with platinum records, they were very much an underground band in the 80s. Their singles/albums usually charted respectably the first week, and then disappeared...
I guess at the end of the day, this is all subjective. I'm also overly kind/forgiving to any musician who creates and puts something out there.
In generally, I think there is a difference between a poorly crafted song and song that checks off your personal needs and likes.
Case in point...
I think Maiden are a victim of their own success considering that they have half a dozen albums that are generally considered to be classics of the genre. If one of my mates said "Hey, I wrote this cool song called the Angel and the Gambler" - I would think it's a really well crafted tribute to...
The Wacken performance isn't great IMO. Obviously, as the last show of that tour, you could tell the band had their minds on vacation (sloppy performance in places - Bruce clowning around more than usual etc...). I wouldn't really want that as a DVD.
The Patriots have had their day in the sun.
I'm a big fan of the EPL and the NFL...but what I like about the NFL is that it tends to be really unpredictable and nearly every team (sans drivel like Cleveland and Jacksonville ) has a chance each year...unlike the EPL where it's the...
What's particularly impressive about that performance is that it's near the end of a 2+ hour set (after a series of vocally challenging tunes). The fact that he can still hit those shrieking highs, and that his non-screamo singing voice is still intact at this point, is quite something. The...
Steve and Bruce have always had a bit of a weird 'vibe' between them, but it did look like Steve was dragged kicking and screaming into the reunion. I think business realities and legacy came into play for him.
Nu-metal and hair metal are both contrived and cheesy genres, but I've always enjoyed hair metal far more. If you strip away the cornball antics/fashion/lyrics, most hair metal bands still had some really memorable songs. Nu-metal? Not so much IMO.
In the late 90s, I was also irritated...
Aside from the SIASL music video footage, was there an 'official reason' why the band didn't do any pro shot filming during Somewhere on Tour? I think every other 80s album had at least one show filmed, right?
Any thread on the forum that is a derivative of "pick the setlist" or "what is your favorite album?" (And yes, I'm guilty of creating a few)
No other band can apparently encourage the fanbase to make an infinite number of 'best of' lists like Maiden...
Yeah, I don't get the Rime comparison at all. ATG is long with a few twists and turns, but it's not the 13 minute behemoth that Rime is. It's more in the standard epic (Powerslave, Phantom, Hallowed, To Tame a Land etc...) territory.
The Apparition was my favorite song off of FOTD when I first listened to the album. I was gobsmacked when I joined the online Maiden community to find that it's generally held in the same esteem as Quest for Fire (which was another one that I quite like).
2am is a great song. Maybe not a...
On one hand, I get that he probably gets bored and tries to mix things up. I mean...his entire career basically boils down to nearly 40 years focusing on about 20 songs or so (and three of those were instrumentals). That must be maddening.
But on the other...he's just devolved into...
I loved that he included Canada as a choice - that was one of my favorites off of Terria.
I remember reading somewhere that it's actually a huge pain in the ass for him to reproduce some of the lesser played stuff because he has to try to recreate the samples/ambiance tracks from scratch for...
BNW by a country mile. It's a nice mix. There's energy, proggy moments, good production, short songs, longer songs, medium length songs, cool album cover etc...
I've always respected PL. The only challenge I have with them is that I think there are several bands that do the "gloomy overcast mood" thing better than they do, and a lot of PL's stuff ends up blurring together/sounding the same to my ears.
