A few months ago, I've chanced upon a Be'lakor album, and I've gone since through all their discography. I can't believe how good they are. Some songs may be too long, and some parts repeated too much, but we all know here that this can't ruin a song.
They used to be chosen by Steve and Bruce, with an eye from Rod. After Bruce's cancer, Steve decided that it was fair to let him chose the songs he wanted/could sing. Steve has explicitly told that in interviews before and during the 2016 tour.
In recent interviews (say, the last 5 years), Smith seems to try to reevaluate his role in the band. He talks more about himself, about his songwirting. It seems to me he wants to highlight his importance in the band's dynamics.
Come on, that was 24 years ago! How can you rely on such an old example to make a judgment? He has certainly written some mediocre/average or even bad songs, but he has penned so many masterpieces.
Ides of March : 8

Murders in the Rue Morgue : 8
Another Life : 9
Genghis Khan : 10 (their best instrumental)
Innocent Exile : 4
Killers : 9
Prodigal Son : 10
Purgatory : 10
Drifter : 8
I'm not a big fans of notations. Does it make sense to give the same note to Prodigal Son and...
It's rather a mistake :). Some of the songs may sound generic to your ear because this album has been so influencial and has been used as a landmark by many bands afterwards. Killers is a masterpiece.
I think it was quite a strange song for Adrian and I like it a lot, way more than the simplistic Fladh of the Blade or the generic Two Minutes to Midnight.
Maybe my age is beginning to take its toll and I can't make the difference, but I'm really wondering if some of you aren't a bit influenced a bit too much my modern sounding production (Sabaton to make a name). Senjutsu is more than decent. Maiden don't want to spend too much time in the studio...
As far as I know, splitting the pit in two parts is the genral rule. You really need to go there early to get that bracelet. Then, be patient, and you will be able to slowly progress to the stage, taking advantage of those who go and buy a beer or go to the toilets. That's my tactics at Maiden gigs.
During BL gig the day before he he repeatedly gave advices/instructions to his bandmates. It looks as if he is not yet fully satisfied with how things are going.
