someone hit the nail on the head - this album has a central theme: the loss of tradition as "progress" swallows it up. very clearly in a few of Steve's epics it's obvious he's lamenting the loss/dilution of "Britishness" as the floodgates of immigration overwhelm it. we have the same dynamic...
you can't seriously be comparing the market for Drake and Maiden as the same market....they aren't even the same universe those crowds. i seriously don't even understand why anyone is paying attention to charts these days. they mean nothing except for box office at shows. THAT is the...
I don't see how you can say he hasn't lost range/technical ability. It's clear as day when you compare his power in the higher registers back in the 80's/90's to how he clearly strains and loses the resonance today when he tries to hi the same notes in the same key/register. He's lost a lot of...
for the record (so to speak), the album (except the studio overload artifiacts) on 96/24 hi-rez sounds incredible on my big ol' martin-logan he-man speakers and NAD preamp and amp. killer dynamics, great imaging and loads of layers you won't hear in the car. this is why hi-end audio will never...
Maiden makes the vast amount of their $ on touring and merchandising. The studio albums are nothing but an excuse to make $ on tour and to get their creative juice flowing. They know there's no money in new music these days. End of story. When they tour they make tens of millions. When they...
physical media sales are basically only for the die-hards and audiophiles. it's over and it's been over for a while. i grew up in the halcyon days of the 80's when bands like def leppard sold 14 million copies of Hysteria. we are now calling 200,000 sales of a physical album a "blockbuster"...
yep totally. it's not theatrical. it's raw and primordial and exactly what i'd like to hear more of from Bruce. it plays to his latter year strengths. the high stuff is more often than not showing his limitations unfortunately.
another recent revelation for me - Bruce uncovers a brand-new vocal styling when he yells in guttural fashion: "love in anger ! life in danger !" during Hell's coda. that right there is the apex of the entire album. chilling. I WANT MORE OF THIS PLEASE.
I gotta say the more I listen the more I'm digging the dirge-like tribal feel of Steve epics (Celts, Parchment, Hell, and Senjutsu). They actually (for once) work better than the shorter songs for the most part as the melodies on the shorter ones are a bit simplistic. Still generally really...
I seriously doubt it's the last. Didn't Bruce say they completed this like in 2019 or 2020 something like that? I bet they have more writing done. I see one more coming...maybe even in a couple years
After 6 six listens or more of each song:
Senjutsu - 10
Stratego - 9
The Writing On The Wall - 9
Lost In A Lost World - 8
Days of Future Past - 8
The Time Machine - 5
The Darkest Hour - 8
Death Of The Celts - 10
The Parchment - 7
Hell On Earth - 9
Title track is really growing on me. Not sure why Death of Celts is getting so little love - I think it plays like a contemplative Braveheart aria. Love it. Time Machine is wearing thin. All else is fine.
After listening a 4th time really loud on a really good system I'll add the following general and specific observations in no particular order:
Production is actually pretty good except: 1) Bruce's vocals are muddied up mix wise on certain songs and in certain passages (maybe doubling or...
Okay so 3rd time listening all the way through this time using 96/24 FLAC files and focusing on the music...
Bottom Line: GREAT ALBUM. These guys are NOT ready to hang it up. They are peaking again akin to BNW/AMOLAD highlights of reunion. Not a bad track on the whole damn thing and it's...
day 3 of having album and having listened to every song at least 3 times at this point. i'm going to hold off on updated ratings after a few more spins but here's what i can say definitively: this is a VERY GOOD album. it's not BNW Part 2 but there isn't a bad song on the whole album to these...
^ exactly and that's where Martin veers from really knowledgeable and (mostly) humorous writer to just absurdity. how does one give Def Leppard's Hysteria a "0" and Maiden's XF a "0" then turn around and give "St Anger" a "7" or whatever. it's just personal bias bs. he's dogged on Maiden for...
Only listened through all the songs once through but here are my very early initial ratings of songs:
Senjutsu – 8/10 (obvious strong Maiden "war" song)
Stratego – 8/10 (same as above)
Writing – 8/10 (cemented as unique song but still a very catchy strong tune)
Lost – 7/10 (not sure how i feel...
pretty sure Bruce is shortest and Nicko is tallest. But isn't the range pretty narrow? Like 5'5" to 5'9" at this point? Janick and Nicko tallest at 5'9" or 5'10"?
yep, immediate reaction no even all the way through is that it's better than TFF and TBOS (for me) but not sure about DOD and so far not going to topple AMOLAD or BNW
