    Murders in the Rue Morgue

'murders In The Rue Morgue' This song has one of the best intros they have ever done. It's a shame they only play Wrathchild or Killers instead of this one.

    Killers

'killers' The intro part is absolutely stunning, those bass sounds and Paul screaming - really great. A very good song, and a true classic.

    Innocent Exile

'innocent Exile' Agreed, sounds quite heavy and reminds me of some 70ies hardrock stuff like early Sabbath. A decent song, but there are better ones on the album.

    Purgatory

'purgatory' A fast paced rocker with lots of guitar harmonies. The drumming is also superb. Overall, one of the best songs on the album.

    Wrathchild

'wrathchild' A great bass in the opening, very cool lyrics, one of the highlights of the album. On the other hand, they kind of overplayed this one live.

    Another Life

'another Life' A very cool drum opening, leading into a catchy song. There's quite a lot going on there musicwise. I only wish they had come up with some more lyrics.

    Sanctuary

'sanctuary' A real classic, though I don't understand why they don't play other songs from that album anymore. As others have pointed out, a typical Maiden composition, simple but effective (and with somewhat awful lyrics).

    Running Free

'running Free' A cool little song telling some kind of story. Those guitar lines in the middle sound interesting, but I miss a real guitar solo on this one.

    Phantom of the Opera

'phantom Of The Opera' One of Maiden's great classics, and easily the best song on the album. As there have been discussions about the production, I'd say it sounds f***in' great. I really like Clive's drumming on this one, therefore I'd go for the live versions of Reading '82 and Hammersmith...

    Iron Maiden

'iron Maiden' Agreed, the lyrics suck. On the other hand, it's a classic, and most people would be truly dissappointed if they wouldn't play if live. Most of the live recordings of that song are much better than the studio version.

    Strange World

Re: 'strange World' My least favourite on the album. It's not a bad song, but I like the others much better. The very bluesy guitars make it different and quite interesting.

    Charlotte the Harlot

'charlotte The Harlot' A cool song with some pretty interesting lyrics. I really like that slow part in the middle and the way it turns back into the faster bit at the end.

    'invasion'

'invasion' A fairly average song, but one of the first dealing with historical events. Musically it's pretty straightforward, the lenghty guitar solos are cool, but otherwise there's not too much to it I think.

    Remember Tomorrow

'remember Tomorrow' I don't really dislike the song, but compared to some of the other stuff on the album it's just sub-par. On the other hand, Paul is really brilliant with his screams on this one.

    Transylvania

'Transylvania' A highlight on the first album, showcasing some brilliant drumming and a nice guitar solo. I think they also speeded it up a bit when playing it live, making it a bit more aggressive.

    'burning Ambition'

Have to agree with Black Ace, pretty well done for the first self-penned song, but only a glimpse of what was to come later.

    'i've Got The Fire'

'i've Got The Fire' Well, not the worst song they ever recorded, but also not one of the better ones... I think it is the only song that they released as a live rendition first, and then as a studio recording, and the recording line-up also changed a bit.

    Prowler

'Prowler' This song virtually explodes with energy, a great opener. IMHO Prowler '88 miserably fails to capture that aggressive vibe.

    Paschendale

'paschendale' Depends on the language you are using. The village is in Belgium, where it is spelled Passchendaele, and in English it translates to Paschendale.

    Killers

'killers' The lyrics of the versions of Live At The Rainbow and Live At Reading are indeed different on one or two lines. I found the following lyrics posted on the Maiden BB - they're not completely correct either, but a good point to start: You fought in the street and you make all your...
