The absolute audacity of this song! 14 minutes long and based on an 18th C. Poem. Who else could get away with it and make it as fucking cool?
I love all the different sections. The atmosphere created with that simple riff overlayed by the spoken verse in the middle section. Spinetingling...
Gorgeous. Love the heaviness of the verses and the chorus is so cool.
Then the superb bluesy midsection is so perfectly placed amongst the heaviness. Great solo and really well thought out closing section. You can tell they put some thought into this unlike some of the filler tracks.

Not sure why majority prefer Flash of the Blade to this. I think the melodies, vocals, guitarwork on this are slightly better and the instrumental is superb. Still not a favourite though

The main opening riff is spectacular and...it pretty much peaks there.
I had to relisten to it several times to get any appreciation for what I always thought was a dud. I don't like the vocals really but it does grow on you. A bit

Can only repeat what others have said. It's a bit hit and miss with some catchy parts and I love Bruce's "Well!" bit.
But the melodies aren't strong enough and it's repetitive.

Just magnificent.
The dynamics in this song are among the best they've ever achieved. All.of the pace changes are perfect within the song. The beautiful arpeggio and softer vocals in the pre chorus are absolutely stunning. And the lovely little bass riff blows me away. Then it builds to that...
Perhaps one of those that suffers a bit of fatigue. Certainly one of the most exciting songs they've ever done and the gallop is very atmospheric here.
It's just a bit too limited to gain a 9 or 10 . So

They'd tried the bluesy intro before a couple of times (Prodigal Sun?), But I think they nailed it with this.
Great atmosphere then that powerful bridge and chorus. Not a classic but a very solid

Not sure why people are upset by the brightness of the song. Not everything has to be dark and powerful! It's good fun and I like the catchy chorus. But admittedly it's pretty limited otherwise.

This is a superb piece of music, absolutely everyone in top form. Love the heaviness of the main riff and the middle instrumental is superb.
I do think it's let down a bit by the lyrics and rather plain vocal melodies though. If this had a strong hook and chorus it would be out of this world.

I don't share the enthusiasm for this but there's a certain maturity to it that I can appreciate.
Seems to be a showcase for the new drummer! But all the better for it. It absolutely pounds along and is a.good album/set opener.

One of a handful of Maiden songs that I absolutely love without being able to define why.
Musically it's nothing special and the vocals are a tad high for my liking. But the gallop is great and the chorus is sensational.

Absolutely epic.
I liked Paul but Bruce's performance on this track is way beyond anything Paul achieved.
The slow build to the immensely powerful chorus. Awesome. The crunching chords accompanying the vocals during the chorus blow me away. Then there's the quick tempo change and that...
Good fun track. Cool intro and superbly catchy chorus then a monster instrumental.
Torn between 7 and 8 but I'll plump for 8 just cos I love the album so much
Another great song on a great album. The spoken intro launching into those brilliant opening riffs and the timing and clarity of the vocal might be one of my favourite starts to any Maiden song.
From there on it pounds along and the chorus is brilliant as are the solos.

This song has grown on me more than any other in Maiden history. Thought it was daft at first. But I've listened more closely recently and now I adore it.
The lyrics are still a bit simplistic but I see now how they reflect caricatures within the story. And it's clever how the pace changes in...
