Really can't understand the appreciation for this song.
Honestly think it's the worst vocal of any song in Maiden history. Blaze is flat and his voice breaks several times. The rather tame instrumental sections just add to the lack of quality. Worst track on the album

One of the best on the album. Another killer intro but this time it develops into a much more interesting song with some real power in the rhythm section.
I love Apocalypse Now and Heart of Darkness too so the lyrics really hit the mark with me.
My complaint, like much of the album is that it...
I like the simple power of the lyrics and to be fair Blaze does them justice.
The 'what does a soldier become' is powerful but loses it's repeated too often and loses effect after a few listens and seems to bog the song down.

The verse and bridge is probably Blaze's best vocal performance. The power of the vocals and guitars during the "monsters of men" bit is immense.
The "oh ohhhh" chorus is.....ok. Then it all seems to go nowhere. Shame

The intro is brilliant and I love the bass riff and heavy guitar build up to the verse.
But then that chorus. Absolutely awful from Blaze and horribly repetitive. This could have been great if it had a killer chorus.

Odd to think that this was the first and best song recorded by Maiden with Blaze.
Even here though I think there are problems with the vocals. His voice sounds ever so slightly out of pitch on some of the choruses.
Tremendously atmospheric song though, haunting intro and one of their best...

A classic. Superb atmospheric intro then that marvellous sudden tempo pickup. The pace changes in fact are what stand out most to be on this track. I like the way they cut in suddenly and there's several clever variations on it.
Lovely lead guitar melodies which encourage crowd participation...
Probably the best short rocker on the album. Much better melodies and much better from Nicko and Dave in particular than on the opener say. Still a bit lacking though

Most repetitive song in the entire body of work? The riff and hook is ok but it should have been used as a small part of another song. Pretty terrible
