Janick's playing is off the wall and unpredictable which helps break up the framework. Nico does wonders in this department as well. Punky is probably incorrect phrasing.
Personally I think Dave leaving would create a huge hole spiritually.
Harris' departure would kill it, obviously. Everyone else is essentially non-essential.
Janick seems the most easily dispensable, but he gives them a punky edge which is needed within their square, rigid formula.
I played Nostradamus through the other day and it was great, but the one track that bores me is 'Prophecy', and that's the one they choose to play live. Bummer.
'Death' is a fantastic track.
Also :)
I see the singular vinyl albums as masculine and the double vinyl albums as feminine, as in Iron(male) Maiden(female).
As a 'story', I think the triple Book of Souls comes first, the Trinity if you will, then the split thus:
IM (m)
TFF-KILLERS (f-m)
AMOLAD-NOTB (f-m)
DOD-POM (f-m)...
I think the artwork, being as strong as it is, tends to stick in your mind along with the music when looking and listening at the same time. It's the way I listen to albums mostly, but I'm a dinosaur.
I've noticed a pattern in Maiden's covers.
Thinking in terms of vinyl, the first 8 albums are...
I thoroughly enjoy Redeemer and still find Book a painful experience.
I give it Book a spin occasionally. The first 3 tracks are mediocre but ok, TRATB is fun but that's all, and the rest is just dull, apart from MOS, whilst interesting Isn't going to set the world on fire.
Redeemer has its...
Totally agree about the album and band. I gave the lp another try recently but couldn't get through a single track. Their worst, most uninspired effort.
I wasn't so sure about Bruce though.
Ersatz Maiden.
You wanted a Snickers but cheaped-out and bought the supermarket own brand.
As you gnaw through your 'Peanut Bar' you're initially amused by its cheeky attempts, but you eventually realise that you're chewing a brick of lard and wasting your health.
It's also a bit like Maiden...
The first 3 tracks are stellar, the next 4 aren't and Alexander is entertaining.
It all sounds a bit wishy-washy to me though. It lacks a real hard edge and saw them change direction in style, if not substance.
Yep.
See the main pic of Eddie between the two totems? That's Necropolis lying in his bed(I originally thought bath, lol) with his feet sticking out the end, the band's faces on his 'soles'(geddit?).
The two other pics, each side if you've got the vinyl, the one holding the heart and the Dave...
The outro spoken part of Eternity is really the explanation for the album's direction of recycling material.
Necropolis, city of the dead or rather the place where the dead(previous albums) reside. BOS is formed from the old records.
Harvests the soul meat, the essence of previous works, and...
^Judas.
I agree mostly. It deserves classic status but it's 5th from bottom for me.
Children and Prisoner I like. The rest is either too pop or dulled by time.
The artwork, however, is my favourite(with original blue sky).
Thing is, if it's a shout-out, it feels like a bit of a piss-take. Almost saying, "Here's the same old stuff again, thanks very much". It's lazy at least.
I can understand new fans lapping it up, but long-term fans? Weird. :\
I don't consider myself diehard, but I'm here and listened to them, on and off, since'81. I like new Maiden, I thought TFF was wonderful.
I just don't want to rain on the parade.
BOS is the least creative of all their albums to me. All previous 15 were unique whilst staying within their rigid...
