The first Nightwish track I ever heard was "Amaranth," which is catchier than anything on TFF. Generally, though, I don't like this kind of wimpy synth-driven Broadway metal, as I've noted before. TFF is not one of Maiden's better albums, but it deserves to win this matchup.
I'm not sure...
Cynic v. Ayreon has a lot of proggy wankery going on. I think I like Aryeon a little bit better, but not interested in owning either. Pretty incredible vocalist, whoever that is, sometimes he sounds like Russell Allen and sometimes like Hansi Kursch.
I remember liking Sanctuary well enough...
1. I couldn’t figure out the point of the Arcturus track. Seemed like soundtrack background music. Plus, Maiden is gonna win, so why fight gravity?
2. Counterparts is a good Rush album but it’s not my favorite, and (spoiler alert) Rush is going to get my vote in this round anyway. I am...
I think, as I get older, I have less and less patience for prog rock/metal. (And probably less patience generally for anything and everything.) Evergray sounds kinda like Symphony X to me. Ayreon sounds kinda like Dream Theater with better vocals. Neither was all that compelling...
Haha, didn’t mean to kick off an entire page of this thread!
Rush is definitely dorky, as is Blind Guardian, and I like them both very much. So why is Haken so much lamer? On a lark, I played Haken for my wife, and she confirmed it was a deal breaker. Just the epitome of uncool...
Haken is the sort of band I would listen to a lot, if I never ever wanted to get laid ever again. Possibly the lamest thing I have heard in this game yet. Like, Steely Dan-level lame. Nope.
Led Zeppelin at its best > Judas Priest at nearly its worst. "The Rover" is heavier than "Revelations" too.
Next matchup is VERY close, but I'll give the slight edge to Thin Lizzy. Rainbow didn't really hit its stride until the next record.
Borknagar was interesting, though I wasn't a fan of...
Me too. But the exact opposite of yours. :p
King Diamond's vocals are stupid, but he has a good band. Still, Zeppelin is a monster, and the disrespect they get on this forum is a bit baffling. They pioneered the music we all like, and this album (LZII) genuinely kicks ass.
Pink Floyd...
High & Dry is a great album, and would match up pretty well with other albums in this round. (Pyromania has greater nostalgic appeal, as it was one of my first hard rock purchases, but High & Dry is probably superior and definitely heavier.) Unfortunately, Physical Graffiti is a masterpiece...
No tough choices for me in this round:
Thorns sounded terrible. Gojira is one of these modern "extreme" metal bands that I don't love, but the quality is nonetheless evident.
Blaze still can't sing, never could, but his band is pretty good and this otherwise ticks the right boxes.
Blind...
But if they go out on the pitch, grab the ball, start dribbling and passing with their hands, and then toss or dunk the ball into the net, then, well, it's not really football (soccer), is it? That's kinda what Pink Floyd is doing here.
At or near the top. There are times I might rate Sabbath or Queen or early Metallica or even The Replacements higher, but over time it seems always to come back to Maiden. Certainly I have more of a nostalgic connection to Maiden than any other band.
