Well... I'd argue that they were covering for two instances of human weakness: one on Steve for being unable to do that kind of backing vocal, and the second on Adrian for being unwilling to do it after he'd previously already done so with Bruce's solo band back in the 90s.

I'm going to cast heavy doubt on that guess, because Steve's been playing to Nicko's versions of those songs for 40 years now. I doubt he wants to relearn Hallowed for example.

Not forgetting Fear of the Dark, the most 80s song they have. That slot could've perfectly well been used for another actually period correct tune but no, we already did one tour without it and the universe nearly collapsed in on itself.

They obviously invested money into it with Shirley mixing and all, but I think Bruce straight-up commented on all the people viewing the show on their TVs at one point (and I know it was aired on TV in multiple countries) so it was definitely a way to advertise both the band and the Early Days...

It's so ridiculously low at times that I genuinely have a hard time hearing it over the other two. Prowler's intro comes to mind in particular, it sounds ridiculous with the riff being completely buried under Davey's wah lead.

The funny part is that the live mix was done by Kevin Shirley from a mobile and it's still amateur hour, with Adrian's guitar basically being AWOL for most of the show. Compare and contrast to the Donington '07 mixes from the songs they released a few years ago and it's night and day, and yet...

I don't think it's really intentionally buried, it's just that when playing rapid triplet patterns with one foot you're not going to get a lot of power in the hits, which will lower their effective volume as picked up by the mic. They probably couldn't or wouldn't boost the bass drum mic too...
