I think the biggest issue with Maiden and solo project productions from Maiden members is that they're all old men who've no doubt lost quite a bit of hearing in the upper range from age but also in general due to working under noisy conditions. Steve obviously has this the worst since he...
Dance of Death with quite a large margin. Hell on Earth was a pleasant surprise in many ways, despite still following many of the Harris epic formula elements to a T, but Dance of Death is a fun story told in a straightforward but musically interesting manner. Plus it has a solo section that's...
The way I see it, he didn't want his name on there because he did what he was told and brickwalled an already loud mix to all hell. Not his fault necessarily since he simply satisfied the clients' requests, but ultimately his responsibility as the mastering engineer. So he took himself off the...
I think this has been proven to be a questionable claim at best, since the mastering engineer was known for brickwalled mixes, and the current Mastered for iTunes version of the album that's replaced the previous everywhere has the same mix, but not brickwalled to the point the bass frequencies...
For all the Shirley isn't the problem posts I'd like to point out that he did admit in his own published studio notes that he doesn't like putting in extra work for sounds. Specifically I think he said if Nicko tunes his drums right then they should sound good once mic'd up. Which of course is a...
I don't think anything else needs to be said. It's got plenty of VXI's flaws but at least doesn't sound nigh-on unlistenably bad, the repetition isn't as insane as it was on the previous record and it has a literal modern classic of a lead single. And one song where the only memorable section...
It's a little striking if you go from the studio B-sides to the live tracks on Best of the B-sides. It's like a completely different band, and that's even though the live mixes aren't stunningly great either. But at least you can hear the guitars!
I do think there's something to be said about just how fucking well-tuned Nicko's kit was. It's no small feat, it's a massive setup with nine toms to tune and yet it's like Nicko found the perfect pitches for all of them. He didn't even trust the tech with it back in the day, he was well into...
The phrase "don't look" is repeated 84 fucking times in Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger, the worst song Iron Maiden has ever put out. It's absurd to think that song somehow exists and four different people played or sang on it.
That's the '86 version or arrangement, which is missing one of the verses after the solo section. A really strange place to shorten it since it skips over a part of the "story" of the song. I don't recall if they did anything to the solo or the pre-solo part which got shortened in '05.
Also the...
Meanwhile, I firmly believe they have no intention to enter the studio any time soon. People are living in the phase of new tour hype where they're totally rejuvenated and ready to record as soon as time allows - despite evidence to the contrary like early next year being once again dedicated to...
If they've established direct contact then that's ample opportunity to send back imagery of cocks and bollocks, true to the spirit of Iron Maiden tradition! I'm sure they'd appreciate the referential humor at the offices.
Those high notes in the chorus give me goosebumps. Man. I forgot what an insane show that was. Also looking at the stage show, I'm sure glad this was before their idea of the biggest, greatest show meant a giant screen because just look at how cool the whole package is with the lights and the...
In the nicest way possible: it fucking sucked. There's a stark difference between an alternative vocal line that's melodically interesting and an alternative vocal line that sounds awful in context of the song and in general because the singer's voice is completely shot due to illness.
I know there were a few people really insistent on Nicko also not being able to do the snare roll properly. I'd politely request those people listen to this version and then come back to me with an equivalent take from 2005.
Dropping the song would be the sensible, reasonable thing, same with downtuning it. But this is a band built on being stubborn about the silliest things so it'll never happen.
Also speak of the devil, I'm listening to the radio for Midsummer Eve and the host just went through his thoughts on...
