Most of my opinions have held, obviously the favourite song of the day changes from day to day
From the classic era, Killers and Piece of Mind were my least favourites when I started listening in the 90s. Now, I rate them as highly as the rest of the classic era albums.
From the 90s albums...
Same here. Only way I could check how the new boy was doing was on a bootleg, pre internet. I bought a CD called 'the South American Rise' https://www.spirit-of-metal.com/en/album/The_South_American_Rise/77517 recorded at the end of X Factour in Buenos Ares in 1996.
He sounded good or even...
Yes that's the first ever time I saw and heard him sing with Maiden in 1995.
He was indeed youthful and with good presence - you can see why Steve hired him. Also on the MTV Most Wanted video.
Sadly, he didn't grow into the role in the years that followed as maybe it looked like he could on...
Blaze's work ethic is second to none, but in different ways for Blaze and Paul, being a former Iron Maiden frontman carries a heavy burden.
I don't mean like Bilbo and then Frodo after they cease being the ring bearer... or do I?
Good for Blaze, and if there was any artistic justice in the world metal fans more broadly would appreciate how good his last two albums are.
Maximum credit for Blaze to pushing right through the mass indifference his solo career garnered initially.
Bruce can just about now manage talking about his solo career without taking subtle digs at his Maiden day job.
He's come a long way since 1994!!!
I expect Bruce is considering how to ramp up his solo career in the gaps between Maiden activity. Or with an eye on 2025, when he will be 'just'...
I agree, Shadow of the Gods has Bruce's warm and controlled tone from Tyranny of Souls.
Mandrake Project has the funny feel of a compilation album to me. I'm enjoying it in that spirit...
Yes that's very fair and I can see your points.
Something that works well for Blaze is that Absolva are absolutely a working class, tomorrow-is-the-same-as-yesterday metal band run as a family business by three brothers. It is the kind of metal that is forged from the metaphorical factory of...
Interesting.... I listened to both one after the other today while at the gym (made it a longer session than planned! but i skipped Sonata as usual)
On CoS, I must say Until We Meet Again might be the most touching and emotively powerful I have ever heard Blaze. Better than Como Estas Amigos...
Really looking forward to seeing Bruce solo play in London this year. But so far glad I am only seeing one show, not multiple dates. Open question now is whether Bruce will have a cohesive band or not on stage.
The impression I am getting is Bruce increasingly likes to fly by the seat of his...
Plenty of my school or university friends I played Maiden to in the 90s/early 2000s hated Bruce's voice.
Its the thing about Maiden that stops them from the kind of Chilli Peppers or modern Metallica or Whitesnake even mid-80s Priest kind of US radio exposure. Bruce's voice is just so British...
My turn now after I have listened to the album about ten times.
Afterglow: 7
Many Doors: 8
Rain on the Graves: 8
Resurrection Men: 6
Fingers: 6
Eternity: 6
Mistress: 7
Mirror: 6
Shadow: 8
Sonata: 4
I quite like the first three tracks but it goes downhill for me.
Eternity feels superfluous...
I have listened to Mandrake Project about 4 times now. Always needs time to grow of course. I'm enjoying it, but I'd still wager to say that of the last 10 full studio albums Bruce has sung on (4x solo and 6x maiden) covering the last 27 years of his career, Mandrake Project is the least...
On the contrary I think this album shows why Roy Z producing a maiden album would not 'solve' anything. And also that its not Harris and his style that alone makes Bruce sometimes sound strained.
Very informative listen, this Mandrake Project has been so far. Also in terms of Brruce's...
Shocked to say this, but I prefer Circle of Stone to Mandrake Project right now.
The quality of Circle of Stone really hit home for me now after a week of listening. tears in the rain, I can just picture the blade runner ending... Some great tracks, a very coherent sound and good doses of...
Not sure I'd even rank it above TOS at the moment.
Let's see how it goes, but AOB and CW were made with H and when Bruce was 39 and 40 years old. Even TOS he was only 47.
I can see what he means by 'mature metal' but so far, Mandrake is missing a lot for me.
Very bitty sounding album with...
First listen... not blown away. Looking forward to Mandrake growing on me of course over time.
Honestly, enjoying Blaze's Circle of Stone far more at the moment.
Realistically...
Tears of the Dragon (on Fear of the Dark)
Son of a Gun (on No Prayer...)
The Lion by ASAP (on No Prayer...)
Born as a Stranger (on VX11)
The Brave (on VX11)
Lots of good songwriting by Maiden members elsewhere that could have strengthened the 90s albums
