Really good to see that Wolfsbane video, thanks. We got an early glimpse of energetic Blaze with his first ever Maiden TV appearances, Top of the Pops and MTV Most Wanted, in 1995. He looked good at first in the TV studios and more like his Wolfsbane self. But then, on tour he started to...

    The X Factor : 30 years on

I'd agree, the SIT sound is unique and more a one-off. Whereas 7th Son sound has deposited its DNA all over modern Maiden (esp BNW to my ears, others my hear it differently)

    The X Factor : 30 years on

This is true, a good observation. The X Factor certainly makes my top 5 of the most important Maiden albums in terms of their musical evolution (not necessarily their best, but when their sound moved forward and added to their musical tapestry). I'd list that as the debut, NOTB, 7th Son, X...

    The X Factor : 30 years on

Yes, it has something of the feel of a natural instrumental jam to it. Also, Unbeliever is a song that is much more intense than I remembered.

    The X Factor : 30 years on

Awesome, I'd love to try the vinyl ... once I get a record player!

    The X Factor : 30 years on

Yes the production was always a problem. Do try the remaster CD / vinyl, it opens up the sound a great deal. This guy even had a go rerecording the guitars himself haha!

    The X Factor : 30 years on

After a very long time I gave the X Factor a complete listen, late to the party having only just gotten the remastered CD. I was struck by how beefed up and vibrant the album sounds, much more so than my memory held it (the 1995 CD sounded dull and crackled). I've always liked the album, so this...

Agreed and made me realise the depths his life dropped to just a few years after Maiden. A very good and underrated book. Wonder what happened to Patterson? He wrote some books on submarines (!) and seems to have ceased being in bands after being in Blaze

I always remember that story from the Patterson book. And it makes me sad that Blaze's confidence and ability to deliver was dependent on such specific things as this. That, and the story recounted in the book when his solo career started to flop... His stint working at the Halfords retail...

    Futureal

Totally agree with you. Especially the most recent short reunion songs. Futureal is one my absolute favourite Maiden songs from the 90s, and holds up well today.

    Rainmaker

Harris screwed up the DOD cover art. Then he made what i think is the wrong decision in Wildest Dreams as the first single. I agree with you :)

Moments you thought "Maiden sounding weird here"

Angel and the Gambler. And wierdly, Benjamin Breeg. I think it sounds so otherworldly and also so simple in the riffing that it sounds like a different band.

    Ullevi 2005: the overlooked masterpiece?

What a show, I have had a DVD copy since back then. Where Eagles Dare and Phantom are masterpieces on that 2005 performance. The Rock Im Ring from that tour is also high quality video but not as good as Ullevi.

NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING - Your thoughts…

Another good archive interview, hadn't seen that one before.

NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING - Your thoughts…

There's something anti-climatic about No Prayer. I like it and Licks of the Beast's video from 2 years ago will make you fall back in love with the riffs: My views... Some of Bruce's and H's better ideas clearly went into their solo albums, diluting the focus of the band. There a good other...

Iron Maiden News, Links, and Interviews

Great thanks. I always though 'The Lion' for sure was a Maiden tune in disguise. Interesting to read Steve thought they could have used 'After the Storm'. But I think all ASAP songs were co-credited, so I wonder if the core of the idea was Adrian's or not?

    Adrian Smith

I would be too. His wife seems absolutely lovely (and a social backbone of the touring spouses) but this kind of video for social media is dumb.

If Clive Burr was drummer on Piece of mind and onwards ?

Interesting question, well posed. I'm no drummer but I'll have a go. Clive had a nice swing to his style and drove the band on their early, pacy material. Whereas Nicko really was idiosyncratic and inventive. I know it's way ahead in the timeline, but Nicko's drumming on a song like The...

    18th Studio Album discussion

I agree with you. I also think Maiden has gotten much better over the reunion years in building impactful setlists. Another example. They even learned from Give Me Ed Till I'm Dead, when they oddly opened the set with Number of the Beast, which just didn't work, and then played Hallowed so...

    18th Studio Album discussion

Maybe it depends on the shows we saw. In 2010 I saw the Dublin show, which was great, energetic and indoors. And I saw the outdoor festival Sonisphere UK show. The weather was overcast and the festival more generally sucked in terms of location and bill. So maybe I wasn't in the zone, so to...
