Just back from Birmingham - a way tighter performance than the videos I’ve seen from the start of the tour.
Agree with snarf - some humour and light heartedness creeping back into the show. Bruce spoke well to the crowd, was witty at times.
Aces High was ok, not as bad as Graspop, but ok. A...
Yup, the Aces High Graspop 2025 has been scrubbed from the internet.
The only maiden tour I haven't seen since I became a fan was 2022 Legacy. Out of curiosity I searched for an Aces High version from then and found Graspop 2022: yes, Bruce was finding a few workarounds in the chorus but he...
Aces Low. Fuck my old boots.
I'm currently re-reading old FC magazines, got to the 2014 issues (fun to re-read them over a decade later). Made me nostalgic for the Maiden England tour which was also songs from the first 7 albums + FOTD by the way!!! And then I found this absolute gem that I...
I agree, I think the Senjutsu title track encompasses a lot of these problems. Its a good song but it lack impact, and some sections really leaving you scratching your head as to why they are so stretched.
What to say? Over time I have come to prefer the first 3 maybe 4 reunion albums over Book of Souls and Senjutsu. While I don't agree with the reviews I recognise their main theme, around bloated song and album length.
Some people reflect that by the 1990s, the CD format forced artists to...
I sympathise
Personally I really don't like Aces High now from what I've heard, it sounds like Adrian is being used to skilfully paper over the cracks.
I went back and listened to some random Aces High versions from 2018, better with Nicko and a still soaring Bruce performance
Phenomenal show. It may be my nostalgia talking, but the reunion lineup 1999 till the early 2010s was really something to behold. The energy and fizz of the band was incredible. It was still great in the mid 2010s - 2024, but obviously slowing down slightly.
I saw Absolva in 2013 in north London just before they hooked up with Blaze. Upstairs in a tiny venue, a few dozen people only. That's where they would be stuck, so really good move for them to have joined Blaze. Also the other brother Luke Appleton going to Iced Earth ( till you-know-what...
I saw the Ed Hunter tour, it was a blur of unbelievability ... I wish I could say it was a brilliant show (it was!) but it was just too unreal.
Weirdly, I'd loved to have seen Raising Hell in August 1993. Seeing it on BBC TV was my first ever encounter with Maiden and at the time I preferred...
Has grown on me, I like the drumming, lyrics, structure, solo section. Love Blaze's vocals on this.
Quite an inventive song, a cult favourite for me. Obviously hindered by all the production issues, but a truly original song shines through.
8/10
Never know how much you'll miss something till its gone away
I'm not a drummer but Nicko seems just really unique in his approach, just like his unique persona.
I fear that as the 2025 tour progresses, we will learn the extent of just what Maiden's sound has lost...
The more clips I listen, good and less good ones, the more I notice just how different the band sounds this year. Again, keeping an open mind for the London show.
My view is the 'best album' debate is fun but its not really where Maiden's strengths are seen clearest. Its the depth of their back catalogue, consistency, and the resumption of quality in the reunion era.
They are a catalogue band rather than a 'best album' band for me.
Interesting perspective, even though I love SIT I recognise some of what you say.
Live under-representation was a factor in its mystique. It was chronic, even from the 1990s when it usually only Heaven Can Wait played (because of the stage opportunity for a few fans I guess).
SIT got 2 songs...
Toynbee quipped that history was just “one damn thing after another”. Harris seems to have bought into that somehow!
Oddly I find Alexander’s lyrics have some charm in the simplicity; and I expect post world slavery Bruce would have had a heart attack if presented with some of your suggestions!
Strange.
The lack of running authenticity must make Lonliness an appealing metaphor for life for non runners (ie me!)
And the lack of rigidly accurate chronology on Alexander is fine for me (and I write history books!)
I've tended to see Maiden's historical songs as much about vibe as...
