The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

Oh look, we have Hansi wailing again, presumably about elves or elvenish creatures. Maybe trolls? No matter. Alien Ant Farm’s cover of Smooth Criminal is solid, but it can’t match Blind Guardian’s layering. And there are a lot of layers. Symphony X may be my favorite band in the whole wide...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

I’ve never liked System of a Down, although this song is better than most. However, it still has morose verses and a (to be expected) obnoxious chorus. On the other hand, nothing about The Who’s song is metal in the slightest. Yes, the bass playing is awesome, but the vocal stuttering is just as...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

I didn’t get a chance to post about it, but that last Ozzy song was actually decent. I was just going to say how strong this one was. Mostly killer, probably a little filler. Definitely far stronger than last round.

Oh the playing is excellent, but I meant more in terms of songwriting. You can just kinda tell that his solo stuff is written to have more space for the vocals (and understandably so). The music takes a bit more of a back seat in comparison.

I prefer his two ‘80s Sabbath albums and his Rainbow stuff to his solo career, too. His solo staples are immensely fun (especially at karaoke), but I can’t help but feel that they’re musically less interesting. Perhaps because Dio (a singer) wrote them, as opposed to Iommi, Butler, and Blackmore?

My favorite is Last in Line, but I do like Rainbow in the Dark. Oddly, though, Dio always hated it. https://rockandrollgarage.com/why-ronnie-james-dio-wanted-to-destroy-rainbow-in-the-dark-song/amp/

Appreciate the info. I guess this makes me appreciate regular non-Nazi black metal more, as I take comfort in knowing that the forest-dwelling, face-painted creatures behind every screech and pot bang are… not Nazis.

I’ve been trying to think of something witty to say, but yeah… I’ve got nothing. That’s fucked up on all levels.

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

This may have been the biggest no-brainer round for me. No time for a write-up, so I'll just say that I find Deliverance to be the strongest track in the round by far - and I've always thought that it was one of Opeth's most overrated songs. Priest's song is good and Slayer's is a classic, while...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

Lol. I’ve never been a big Queensryche fan, but they beat nu-metal by default. Lol. Enter Sandman might be the most overplayed metal song of all time, but you’d have to have your head in the sand to think it’s a bad tune. The main riff is great, the chorus iconic, and the surprise punch at the...

I feel the same about the vast majority of Beatles material.

Scorpions, and it’s not close. I dig the chorus riff, even though the vocals are annoying. Not a great tune or anything, but I find Kiss Me Deadly to be quite annoying. I know little about Lita Ford, but I know I’ve heard her do better than this. Sabbath have some pretty atmospheric iceberg...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

First match is the toughest because I like both songs, but I figure that if it’s Vikings vs Tarja and Emppu (for that riff), the Vikings would win. Brutally. Amon Amarth. Cemetery Gates, while not my favorite Pantera song, is a classic. Who is Alter Bridge again? Diamond Darrell and the Raging...

I haven’t had a chance to listen to the UFO cut yet, but they’ll most likely get a vote from me. System of a Down is annoying as shit.

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 5, Matches 79-84

Back in Black is definitely one of AC/DC’s better tracks (if you possess the rare ability to differentiate them from one another), but Carry on Wayward Son is classic and also a major proggy influence on the greatest songwriter who ever hath lived, Michael J. Romeo. I don’t care that Kansas...

    Kamelot

The Great Escape and Waiting in the Wings are my favorites, and I’ll agree that Tiara and The Testament, while solid, don’t live up to those two. Mercy Falls is the album I’ve never much cared for, possibly due to the hilarious voice acting and too much technical wankery. I haven’t heard either...

    Kamelot

My Kamelot tier list is relatively straightforward: S Tier: Karma, Epica, Black Halo, 4th Legacy D Tier: everything else I’m a huge fan of Tommy’s voice, but the fact that he actually left the musically superior Seventh Wonder to focus on goth teen metal makes me dislike Kamelot even more. The...
