This one has grown on me a bit more lately. It has a really nice groove to it, and I've gotten used to the chorus. I still feel it's one of the weaker tracks overall, especially lyrically, but overall it's a good tune.
TNOTB isn't an album I listen to all the way through very often, so I've never had the problem of burnout with RTTH. It also wasn't played the one time I saw them live. I'm sure it's different for long-time fans, but for me it is a very good song. Far from being in my top 10 of Maiden, but I...
I agree that both solos in FOTD are fantastic, but Dave's is possibly his best ever(aside from maybe CSIT). It perfectly toes the line between fast and melodic with great emotion that vibes with the theme of the song. The last few bars in particular flow perfectly into the melody that follows...
That section is actually my favorite part of the song and possibly my favorite on the entire album. It's a great prog section, reminds me of Fates Warning.
I like the intro being reprised, it's just the transition that's a little sloppy. Otherwise, I really enjoy this track. It has some of the best lyrics on the album in my opinion.
This song is SO good! It just keeps growing on me. I don't even mind the Losfer Words-esque riff here because it's far heavier and works well. The vocal lines are some of the best in a long time too. I can't wait to hear this song live.
My second favorite band after Maiden. I love all the eras, but overall prefer original vocalist John Arch. His style is just incredible, but it can take a while to get used to, since he often doesn't follow the rhythm exactly. Alder is great too, but in a different way. Jim Matheos is the man...
The vinyl is noticeably better. I finally listened to my copy last night, and the lead guitar is far cleaner and sits better in the mix. Definitely worth the purchase.
The part starting at 9.39 is amazing. I still don't understand the purpose of the rhythm section that comes before it though. I would prefer a new vocal line to transition or just go straight from the solo to the melody. It feels empty as is to me, but it's only for a short while so not a huge...
The band really turned a corner with NOTB. The songwriting became much more epic, and the addition of Bruce provided a much needed amount of versatility vocal-wise. It is a classic for sure, but only the beginning, as they would continue to progress as musicians and songwriters.
The opening riff is very cool, reminds me of Sea of Madness. From there it sounds like a bit of Van Halen mixed with Man on the Edge.
The chorus is the problem though. The tempo change doesn't work at all.
There's too much familiar territory in this song. With the Wasted Years intro and Fallen Angel verses, it's the least original piece on the album.
The chorus and solos are good though. My favorite part is when Bruce comes back in after the first two solos, "Into the valley of death fear no evil"
Some of the best melodies on the album are in this song. I also love the whoah-ohs, it's classic 'Arry. The instrumental section could have used some tightening up though. There's really no need for some of the basic rhythm passages, either put some vocals over them or go straight to the melody...
I kind of wish the intro would have been done with guitars instead of the keyboard. Otherwise this is one of the best songs for sure.
I can't wait to hear this one live!
