The Book Of Souls (song not album)

Absolutely magnificent epic. Has a power and pathos that is missing from some parts of the album. Brilliant sprawling solo. Superb riffing and a knockout chorus. And most importantly, I think Bruce's best performance since BNW. The lyrics don't particularly speak to me which stops it getting...

    When The River Runs Deep

Very ordinary in all honesty. Tempo changes don't work . Melody isn't anywhere near strong enough. 6

    The Red And The Black

Listened to this song so many times and still can't make a decision about how I feel about it. There's just a ridiculous amount going on. It's epic in scope but possibly suffers in a subjective sense- it contains too many of the Maiden hallmarks I'm not thrilled with. Guitar/vocals matching...

    The Great Unknown

Reminds me of Mother of Mercy. Loads of nice stuff going on but then... Bruce reaching for the high register. It is a grower though. Strong 6

    Speed Of Light

Fun with phenomenal energy. Doesn't have quite the hook that something like the Alchemist did though. 7

    If Eternity Should Fail

Mysterious intro. Strange opener in some respects being target mid tempo. It does feel they are playing within themselves at times here. But that's a tremendous chorus (probably best on the album). Must say I love the outro! 8

    El Dorado

That gallop might be the best they've ever done, certainly in the reunion era! Seriously that bass riff is one of the catchiest I've ever heard and I love Bruce's understated vocals in the verses. The chorus does stretch Bruce's voice too far though, much like Mother of Mercy. It's still a...

    Isle of Avalon

Adrian is amazing isn't he? It's epic and proggy and the chorus might be one of their most hard hitting and powerful ever. 9

    Starblind

Great lyrics, brilliant atmosphere and a stunning chorus. A superb epic. 9

    When the Wild Wind Blows

Quite possibly my favourite post reunion track. The story is captivating. The structure is reminiscent of DoD with no real chorus yet the mellow verses still build beautifully to the darker, more aggressive second half. The heavier 'They've been preparing' segment is just brilliant. Awesome...

    Mother of Mercy

This has grown on me a lot. Hated it at first because of the chorus and I still don't enjoy Bruce at that pitch. However the rest of it is impressive and dark and the ending is so dramatic. 7

The Man Who Would Be King

A complex, ambitious song but the different elements don't come together for me. I actually find parts of it boring which is not something I've ever said about Maiden. 6

    Coming Home

So much emotion in this song and Bruce nails it. Love the themes in the lyrics and the melodies are magnificent. 9

    The Talisman

Really like the chorus but I don't think it does enough for a song of this length. The story kind of drags on a bit too. 7

    The Alchemist

I've not scored these types of track highly but I must admit I absolutely love this and am gutted they never played it live. I like the retro harmony intro and then it launches it to full throttle. Think it might be one of the most fun album tracks they've done and the "Dr Dee" chorus is just...

    Satellite 15.. The Final Frontier

I think the demo intro is really exciting and was a perfect intro piece for the tour at the time. I absolutely love the drums, however artificial. And the haunting vocals are great. Also the FF section is simple but great fun with a brilliantly catchy chorus. What's not to like ? 8

    The Legacy

Can't really get into this no matter how hard I try and I normally like a Jan epic! It's quite experimental, which is good, but it doesn't quite come off in any way that appeals to my taste. The acoustic backing goes on too long and the high-low synthy riff grates me a bit. I do think it's...

    Lord of Light

I love the sudden switch in tone when the deep chorus hits. But I find the verses a bit uninteresting. Interesting lyrics 7
