Depends what market. In the US, I remember Priest being much more visible. Despite the gold and platinum albums, I always remember Maiden being underground in the 80s (no mainstream radio support and no videos during primetime on MTV). There was a small stretch in 86/87 where Wasted Years...

Agree with Mosh. May is more of an innovator. Slash certainly has an iconic tone, and has several legendary rock radio moments, but he never really brought anything new to the table...which I would consider a requisite for being a "top" guitarist.

I did really notice a drop off in Maiden's popularity in the States until about FOTD. During that time period, you had the Black album, the Use Your Illusions, and all of the big grunge albums completely overshadowing them at the time. I actually remember hearing NPFTD stuff on mainstream...

Really good post. If you ditched the covers and made the song titles more 'Maidenish', I would have totally bought into this. You matched the hyperbolic tone of the official announcements.

Also...A lot of bands are perfectly happy to "chase their tails" in the States and Western Europe for their entire career. Maiden has had a global approach for as long as I can remember ( which arguably allowed them to survive the 90s as they weren't dependent on any one market to survive).

I know this is blasphemy, but Mindcrime is underwhelming IMO. It took me a long time to appreciate AJFA. SS has always been a classic for me since day one of its release.

Here's the thing...maybe I'm old, but: Zeppelin have been sued by over half a dozen bands and had to change several of their writing credits - their plagiarism is legendary The Beatles were sued by Chuck Berry. Paul McCartney famously said in Guitar Player in 1990 that 'A good artist borrows...

Given the "musically incenstuous " and highly derivative nature of rock music, from the Beatles onward, I think claims of plagiarism are mostly ridiculous. This is complicated by the fact that there are only 12 notes in Western music, and of those notes, only so many combinations are pleasing...

On the way in to work this morning, I heard three different songs that used a variation of the "I don't know where I'm going/I know where I've been" lyric. Perhaps some obscure band from the 70s can sue for damages....

That actually sounds about right for the States. They have 5 platinum and two gold records (NOTB through NPFTD) to account for about 6 million, with the remaining records making up the rest.

Maiden doesn't really have a traditional"the thing that should not be" or "into the Void" type of heavy song. Heavy for me is slow, low, and evil.
