I once described City to a friend as:
"Imagine if the Joker (of the Christopher Nolan universe) finally killed Batman and then formed a extreme metal band and took a bunch of acid to celebrate...and then ultimately committed suicide in a complete manic breakdown all whilst laughing"
Pure...
From a 10,000 ft view, this whole thing is rather funny. A courtroom full of well educated/well paid legal experts diligently arguing over who wrote "Charlotte the Harlot show me your legs, Charlotte the Harlot take me to bed".
I bet the truth is somewhere in the middle. Steve/Rod probably...
The other thing that I love about the Apparition is that it lyrically fits in perfectly with the 'dark haunted forest' vibe of the title track/album cover.
I agree on the production aspect - It sounds a bit dry, thin, and mid-rangey, which lessens the impact of some of the riffs (particularly Revelations). It's not one of the strongest sounding Maiden records (even though the song writing is solid).
A few disclaimers:
I've never been a professional musician
I've never been a good musician
Calling myself a musician is even a stretch...
With that said, I have played in my fair share of pub bands in my college era many moons ago. The one thing I remember is that crafting original songs was...
For as long as I can remember, Maiden's marketing/self promotion has been crafted carefully with bravado that borders on hyperbole. I can't see them doing a history retrospective that doesn't fit that narrative. Unless they somehow dramatically spin it "we thought it was time to give our US...
Another angle is that the merchandising empire likely allowed Maiden to avoid the alternate route of primarily relying on heavy radio/MTV rotation in the 80s and 90s, to stay viable. That's presumably how they were able to stay 'underground' and avoid the flavor-of-the-month trends of those...
This was the album that I realized that Devin isn't like most other artists. He certainly doesn't care about building a specific brand, and he isn't afraid of having a laugh ( for an entire album). I have to admit that it was really weird at first - especially coming from a...
The merchandising is likely a byproduct of Rod looking for ways to recoup the lost millions from non-existent album sales. Almost all bands are doing that now.
You could make the argument that they make plenty of money from touring alone, but they've always been an opportunistic business...
I see blasphemy on this thread.
Invaders is endearing. It's full on Super Mario power up. How is that not bad ass?
There's a time to live and a time to die... That's as metal as you can get. Love the uptake after the verse.
Bruce is good at reminding you he's back in the village. Again...
My answer doesn't address the question exactly, but my answer is...Caught Somewhere In Time.
How can that be when they've never released an official live version of it?
Well...it was always one of my favorite tunes from SIT so I went digging on youtube to find a really good live version of it...
It's definitely a strange album - a mix of Godflesh, Fear Factory, Ministry where overwhelming sonic mayhem and texture are prioritized over traditional song structure.
Even though I was a fan of industrial/noise bands of the early 90s, this album was still a little tough to really embrace as...
I agree with Mosh - not sure how this song never became a classic as it has all of the parts.
Aside from ATG, I'd love for this one to be the one of the rarities that they attempt live before they retire (it'll never happen...but one can hope).
You guys are lucky! The US venues that I have been to have been a mixed bag on that front. I think part of it is that there are always too few ushers so if something happens, the response is slow.
Realistically, a Maiden show is pretty tame, crowd behavior wise, compared to so many other...
