whilst listening to "The Mercenary", "The Assassin" and "The Apparition" (among many other "The ..." Maiden tracks), I often imagine that the Mercenary, the Assassin, and The Apparition are sailing at sea (and thus they become sea-faring epics also!)
The Unbeliever never sets sail though - for...
Parallels is probably my 2nd favorite Fates album after Spectre Within - although I sometimes rate Disconnected and FWX higher than Parallels (the lyrics of the first two FW albums of the 2000's always hit me in the gut)
As blasphemous as I can be (but its the truth):
7th Son is not in my top 10 Maiden albums list
(love Moonchild and the Title Track though - both are in my Top 25 Maiden songs of all time)
enjoying the punchy quality of the drums on the first single "Scars" (sounds a bit too "in the pocket" to be a Jarzombek drum performance?), but the song hasn't connected too deeply with me yet (currently on listen #2)
The Ladder is mostly excellent all the way through - perhaps best of all, the band sounds incredibly happy and the performances are spirited throughout.
in some ways, it plays like a 90125 for the late 1990's- with bits of 70's Yes thrown in for good measure.
There's also a series of strong...
Yes
1: Awaken
2: Perpetual Change
3: Yours Is No Disgrace
4: Roundabout
5 Homeworld (The Ladder)
6: Changes
7: Sound Chaser
8: Machine Messiah
9: Turn of the Century
10: The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn)
didn't the sailors in Rime die of fecal-borne illness (from Albatross poop) while the sailors in The Talisman either died of dehydration (10 days without water), monstrous waves lashing them into the water, or from the scurvy (as our narrator supposedly succumbed to)?
Jethro Tull:
Heavy Horses/Songs From The Wood (can't separate these two masterpieces)
Stand Up/Benefit (also can't separate these two)
Van Halen:
Van Halen II
Fair Warning
5150
Obsequiae
Obsequiae has only 3 full-length albums, but they're all excellent - a slight dropoff in greatness from...
good XTC picks (I'd probably sub in Drums and Wires for Nonsuch, but to be fair I haven't really given enough good listens to Nonsuch).
XTC is underrated by hard rock/metal bands - quite a bit of power in their progressions at times
Black Sea is definitely a banger
Black Sabbath:
1: The Sign of The Southern Cross
2: Lonely Is The Word
3 Falling off the Edge of the World
4: Heaven and Hell
5: Children of the Sea
6: Wheels of Confusion
7: Anno Mundi
8: Die Young
9: Country Girl
10: Megalomania
Dig that line a lot - many of the lyrics are anti-religion (which certainly deserve some scorn/ridicule) but its nice to see that the citizenry/governments are left out
I don't think of listened to more than 2 or 3 Test For Echo songs in the last TEN years.
I've always liked Carve Away the Stone - and oddly enough Colour of Right is a tune that I come back to.
So many songs sound like the band is just fiddling around, dialing things in so to speak.
Much more...
