    The Pilgrim

6 - If I had to make a list of Iron Maiden‘s most routine songs, this would almost certainly be on it. There’s nothing “wrong” with it. It has a signature riff, it shifts pace, the subject matter is interesting, it has a memorable chorus - well two actually - and it is identifiably Maiden. But...

    Brighter Than A Thousand Suns

8 - What a monster. That off-kilter, slightly nauseous lurching main riff, the crush of the bridge riff between verses, the deceptive disassociation of chorus section and a monumental lyric combine to make this - bar none - the heaviest track in the catalogue. The band does a stellar job of...

    These Colours Don't Run

9 - It’s not the pinnacle, but in a lot of ways this is a signature song for what Maiden is post-reunion. Quiet intro, mirrored outro, sudden time changes, dramatic composition, dramatic vocals, big chorus, thoughtful lyrics, great guitar melodies, interesting solo, trippy Nicko-isms, an...

    Different World

9 - It’s hard to buy into the meme that post-reunion Maiden can‘t do short, fast rockers when songs like this exist. Lean, economical and so, so tightly played, this is a textbook example lesson what a “classic metal” single should sound like. Adrian’s riff is a nice hook, judiciously used, and...

    Least favourites on Senjutsu

I think I'm finally familiar enough to start sharing. There are no clunkers. But the two I am most likely to skip are Darkest Hour and Senjutsu.

How old were you when you started listening to Maiden and which 3 albums did you buy first?

Killers, Beast, Piece of Mind all within a year of each other (82-83) I discovered heavy music in the 9th grade. My first purchases included Rush, AC/DC, Ozzy and Van Halen and discovering new music became an obsession. Within a year or so I was starting to buy albums based on such sketchy...

    Darkest Hour

It’s a song, capturing a feeling, inspired by crucial period in the history of the author’s nation - in all likelihood coming from stories told to him in his formative years by people who lived it. Those of you hoping for a more detached, thorough, clinical, academic take on the life and impact...

    Senjutsu

While I admire the different approach artistically, I‘ve come to the conclusion it was a mistake not to include a traditional Maiden rhythm section approach in this song.

I‘m quite surprised how invested many of you seem to be in this topic.

    Hell On Earth

Great take. I would interpret it slightly differently in that the song is a meditation on how willfully obtuse comfortable people are to all the shitty things in this world. The extended calm introduction is a deliberate representation on us carrying on, oblivious, to all but our modern bread...

    Death Of The Celts

I haven’t done a deep dive into the lyrics yet, but I didnt think the narrator is a Celt, I thought he’s headed to fight them.

    Hell On Earth

Surprised no one has talked about the rhythmic chant/rap vocal delivery in the “dance on the grave” section. Very different for Maiden.

    Darkest Hour

This is the one that has (surprisingly) clicked with me the least. I hear everything that others are saying they love, but I’m not feeling it yet.

    Death Of The Celts

Lowest-ranked song on first listen. The one that’s grown the most since.

    Senjutsu - 3rd September 2021

Nice catch! And indeed, very Steve. I have not had a chance to dive into the lyrics much yet, but I take it “defending the wall” in the title track is a metaphor for the more real-world battles explored in Hell on Earth? I like.

    Senjutsu - 3rd September 2021

I think some listeners have missed something in their complaints about the production. Sure there are moments when Bruce is battling with the band in order to be heard. But equally at fault here is Bruce himself. He is singing very well in general, but that “muffling” you’re hearing is often...

Initial impression, one listen: Good and worthy of heavy exploration. Familiar enough yet different enough. Senjutsu: love the power, not certain about the monochrome pace, like nothing they've done before, good chorus; likely to be grower Stratego: Instant grabber; fantastic chorus and rhythm...
