He could at least get a groove regardless of the sound. all the albums they did with him benefit from a 5-8% speeding up. This was never the case with Martin. Simple as that.
I do agree with you for the most part. Maiden are still alive and doing well worldwide. I however do not think that the albums they did created any real buzz. Indeed the reunion has a greated impact that the sum of its' parts...and this is due to their amazing back catalog of classic material...
There are a lot of guitar layers in the studio version of WOTW, It kind of pisses me off seeing Dave so underused. Just smiling and holding single chords.
I think that best version of the song was during the 99 tour. Last time I heard such a full sound at a Maiden show. The Wickerbland single had some live song versions from that tour. Then BNW tour was as if the 3 guitars became thin ovenight.
To me Maiden have 4 periods. Since the classic era was from 82-88 and for some 82-92, I would add two albums from that period

Iron Maiden : Steve has used the Opera riff for almost 40 years now and in most of his songs
Powerslave; High energy Maiden at its' best
Seventh Son: Best...
Janick hasn't been enjoyable for me to watch and listen to (live) since the FOTD tour. His style kind of matched NPFTD and his live performances then were quite accurate. To be honest I never cared for the accuracy but his live improvisations are dreadful for the most part (H changes his solos...
I would prefer - at this stage in their career, if they did one best of tour and then a "new material' one.
One might say that this is what they are doing....but I do not think this is completely true. I dont see why we need to have the same songs closing the set. NOTB, RTTH,IM, The trooper and...
I did not do anything there, but it defenetily needs to have the mid section cut in half
(Now under siege have the real strength to hold them now
Have to believe that we can repel them
Faith in the years our ancestors taught us
Have the belief that we can protect the wall
Try if they can, we...
I sped up WOTW and Stratego to bring them close to their live lenghts. This is why a good prodicer/ sound engineer is needed. Martin could not have his way with the arrangements but he could get great performances and grooves out of the band.
