Saw Project Hail Mary (2026), directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, at the pictures.

A movie project which began even before the book it is based on was out. Ryan Gosling stars and produced this major blockbuster science fiction movie, attached to it since it was just a manuscript. So is it any good?

Well, I consider the book to be the defining science fiction novel of the 21st century. I truly believe it will be an all time classic when some times has passed. And; if that is true; this might be the defining science fiction movie of our time. (It is better than Interstellar.) It's a homerun. Absolutely captures the book and remains faithful to it throughout, while translating it to the new medium with extremely good results.

It is not The Martian 2.0. That is one thing which I'm quite surprised about. It leans in on other things than the technical solutions so prominent in that movie & book. It would have been so easy to just follow the blueprint considering the similarities. Instead it is more ambitious, and surprisingy some of the most memorable scenes are the flashbacks back to Earth where Sandra Hüller does an amazing job as the head of the mission project.

Purists will be happy to know every set was built for real, no green screen was used (not even for Ryan Gosling in space), and the alien is a puppet like the original Yoda. There's a timeless feel to it, mixing modern and classic looks. I see it repeated in review after review that this story doesn't do anything new. I believe that couldn't be further from the truth, and I'll be waiting while they list feelgood buddy cop stories set in space; filled with humour and friendship. I believe they are mistaken, and that I will be waiting a very long time. There isn't anything like this. Not since E.T has the genre been challenged like this.

I went yesterday to a screening of Project Hail Mary. I loved it. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily better than Interstellar, but it’s in the same league. And I actually laughed quite a few times during the movie.

Overall, at its core, the film is about friendship, sacrifice, and endurance - about the universal need not to be alone in the infinite vastness of space. Give me more grand, ambitious sci-fi films like this!

So, one of the side channels of my country’s national broadcaster is showing a documentary about the Bee Gees. And now I’ve learned that their manager was a guy named Robert Stigwood - a man of many occupations.

Visually, he even looks a bit like Rod Smallwood. And his surname ends in WOOD too! I’m sensing a glitch in the Matrix.

Or maybe our Rod is a vampire who had a few side gigs in the past. Damn, first he was managing Beatles wannabes who later became disco kings.

I've been bingeing A LOT of Star Wars. My original plan was to watch Andor, Rogue One, Episodes IV-VI and call it a day. But then my brother recommended Rebels. Then I noticed the Maul show. Disney has a section where everything is in chronological order. That made me curious about the Acolyte since it takes place before everything, but a couple of people have told me it sucks ass. Seeing Ahsoka in Rebels made me curious about her live action show.

therefore the plan now is Andor, Rogue one, Rebels, Maul, Episodes IV-VI, Ahsoka. MAYBE Acolyte, rewatch Mando and Ahsoka. Unlikely rewatching Episodes I-III

EDIT: Hot take: Chopper > R2. Yeah, I said it.
 
Watched The Straight Story (rated G movie by David Lynch) ... an incredibly slow-paced film, but just insanely good. Basic plot, based on a true story. An older man wants to visit his estranged brother. He can no longer drive a car, so has to drive through Iowa into southern Wisconsin on a lawn mower .. meets interesting people along the way. Worth checking out
 
Watched The Running Man remake with Glen Powell. I rolled my eyes, cringed and smirked at several lines of dialogue and some of the action sequences (Home Alone house, IFYKYK), but overall I liked it. I liked the idea of expanding it from an obstacle course to the whole country. It was also interesting to see that either people are running out of ideas or it's just harder and harder to predict a quickly evolving technological future with TVs that watch you back, an idea that goes back to at least 1984 and that is basically what Smart TVs, Smart phones and Alexa do. Ever present surveillance, the big hoopla over FLOCK cameras in the U.S which started with traffic cams in general and people criticize in cities like London with the amount of CCTV cams on every corner.

It isn't deep, which is why its preachy or supposedly poignant dialogue falls flat, but it isn't a waste of time.

For me it was nice sunday movie. Not very deep but fun enough to spend rainy sunday in front of TV.

I just finished another rewatch of Person of Interest. Definitely a top-five sci-fi/action series for me. The show's take on surveillance, AI, and the role of corporations and governments in all of this was ahead of the curve. The show "predicted" the problem of mass surveillance a few months before the Snowden scandal, and the AI problem a decade earlier. It's definitely worth watching.

 
I watched Obsession and it was disappointing.

I don’t get it. They made no effort to show that the world was actually in danger of coming to an end, it was all told through dialogue. “Hey, the world is ending, let’s send this nerd to space to save us.” The rock guy he befriended was cute, but not a very interesting film overall. Overhyped in my opinion, like the Obsession.
