The album that got me into Maiden in the 80s, and the one that never left my rotation even after I drifted away from the band for several decades.
I love how wildly different everyone's rankings are here in this thread, because all eight songs are so great that any tiny aspect can shift the rankings.
1. Caught Somewhere in Time: I've seen Maiden in concert twice, decades apart, this was the perfect song opener both times. To this day I still get chills every time I hear the opening notes.
2. Wasted Years: Great catchy rocker, peak Bruce vocals, pulsing tempo, killer solo. Great all around.
3. Alexander the Great: This might have been my favorite song on the album based on the instrumental parts. The only ding I feel is that some of the verses feel a bit plodding with the simplistic 'dah-duh-duh, dah-duh-duh, dah-duh-duh' in the background.
4. Heaven Can Wait: I love the nonstop energy, and the fact that at one point it seems like the guitar solo is over and they rip back into another solo. Still makes me want to bang my head.
5. Sea of Madness: Comes in heavy, but my favorite part is actually the quiet breakdown with the subtle guitar parts. Very unique and original.
6. Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner: Beautiful song, inspired lyrics, a bit proggy in the way the twists and turns can make it feel like hearing different songs all in one.
7. Deja Vu: Originally I wasn't very high on this song because the opening verses are the beginning of the 'Bruce Growly Vocals' that I came to dislike so much later especially with No Prayer and FOTD. However he quickly shifts back to his normal great vocals and the song itself is catchy as hell.
8. Stranger in a Strange Land: The fact that I rank a song this good at number 8 in my favorites is a testimony to how great this album is. I love the opening bass line setting up the very heavy wall-of-guitar sound. I don't have anything negative to say about this song, I just happen to like the other ones more at this point.
If I did this ranking every year it would probably be different every year, with the exception of having CSIT at the top of the list consistently.
