5 Songs For a New Maiden Fan

1. Purgatory - In my opinion, perfectly represents the early years' raw rock n' roll chutzpah.

2. The Number Of The Beast - My first Maiden song! The atmosphere in it could create a lasting impression on the listener's mind.

3. The Trooper - Perfect signature Maiden song. The harmonies, vocals and the war-themed lyrics common for the band.

4. Infinite Dreams - Displays their late 80s experimental phase from Seventh Son, along with sharing a guitar tone similar to Somewhere In Time.

5. The Longest Day - Representing the band's current/reunion period style of writing epic numbers.

If they are someone close to you, give 'em Hallowed Be Thy Name as a bonus!

Aces High
The Clansman
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Killers

Lead single from latest album, something from Paul and Blaze era too.

If you want to show them how good musicians they are

Seventh son of a seventh
Phantom of the opera
Fear of the dark
Aces high
Run to the hills

All with bruce.

The best list so far—you nailed it, buddy. Oh, those nights spent listening to Mission from ‘Arry, or rainy mornings with a cup of tea and More Tea Vicar. Your research on this band is spot on. Historian-level, Indiana Jones level.

I remember really having a hard time understanding Nicko in the the Listen with Nicko bits - at the same time it was also the coolest thing in the world to hear from an original member of the band back then.

I think the sentence I'll mostly remember from these episodes is: "Not a lot of people know that!"

I'd go:
Trooper, Aces High and Hallowed (all of them well known and pretty iconic)
then Wasted Years (easy to sing along and my fav Maiden hit) and the last one should be a more "hidden gem" or not that well known at least, maybe Caught Somewhere in Time.

I think the essential parts of Maiden's music are the gallop, Bruce's voice, the upbeat energy, the epic feel (even in shorter songs), the long epics themselves, and the guitar harmonies. I think these would nicely cover all of that:

The Trooper
Rime of the Ancient Mariner
The Evil That Men Do*
Brave New World
Hell On Earth

*As this was the song that made me start calling Maiden my favourite band, I'd say if a new listener doesn't like it, Maiden aren't for them :p

It's not meant to be a diss to Paul or Blaze to exclude their songs, but my own experience as a Maiden fan was getting a better appreciation for them after I'd been a fan for a while, I was a little dismissive of them when I first started listening.

The Number of the Beast
The Evil that Men Do
Fear of the Dark (live, whatever one is on Best of the Beast)
Wasted Years
Can I Play With Madness?

IMO the best ones are:

Phantom Of The Opera
The Number Of The Beast
The Trooper
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Wasted Years

Other tracks like Wrathchild, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Flight Of Icarus, 2 Minutes To Midnight, Powerslave, The Evil That Men Do and Fear Of The Dark are also great introductory songs.
