The last dvd or cd was book of souls live chapter. And the previus one En vivo. I dont think that they are forgetting that. And we have a 2 years gap due covid.

Every band in metal make their profits on tour, from ticket sales and especially merchandise, i.e. t-shirts. Physical media isn't even a drop in the bucket compared to touring, and in that category it's albums (as in on vinyl) that will be the most profitable ventures, since everybody charges a pretty massive premium for them as collectors' items.
 
Getting back to the subject matter of the thread and thinking about the discussion over the last couple of pages I’d be royally pissed if I can’t buy a copy of this documentary when it’s released.

Sure I’ll try and watch it in the cinema if it’s on at one near enough to me and I wouldn’t even mind if it gets sold to somewhere like Amazon prime or Netflix after as I subscribe to both and a few other streaming services. I’d be pissed off big time though if this just gets sold around to a load of different streaming services with no way of owning a copy though. That would be stupid.

Even if I could buy it in iTunes like BOS live chapter that would be something. I do buy into the pay monthly subscription services but there are a few things I don’t want to have to rely on always paying monthly to be able to watch.

Actually, that’s another trick maiden are missing. Why haven’t they uploaded all the vhs/dvd/blu rays they’ve ever done (plus the bonus features) to iTunes or prime? I’d buy them all again in a second just to have the convenience of being able to stream them anywhere even though I own them physically. I know they have a few uploaded on YouTube so probably think that’s enough but really that’s another trick their missing.

Metal bands make their profits from gigs and merch. Profits from streaming can't be ignored though, especially for the most popular bands.
 
I won’t be surprised if the doc doesn’t come to dvd. An exclusivity deal with a streaming service seems more likely, with maybe a VOD download option.

I have mixed feelings on how to best handle physical product right now. I think some artists have caught on to how to take advantage of a collectors’ market. Maiden has made some half hearted attempts but nothing seems to have stuck. Of course they could try to put more effort in than something like a Senjutsu box of trinkets, but the double edged sword is that since the Senjutsu box didn’t sell they’re probably not going to try something that involves more effort because they don’t think it will sell.

It’s not like bands have stopped making physical products though. It seems like lavish vinyl sets is the safe bet right now, as well as all encompassing “super deluxe” box sets.

I don’t want to get my hopes up but I guess there’s a world where this documentary is a sort of turning point for archival material. If the producers of the documentary are actually given access to the archive and pull out some material that’s worth releasing/the documentary is a success maybe that will inspire the band to release more content.

When you think about it, this will be Maiden’s first big production since En Vivo. Maiden England was pretty obviously slapped together, but En Vivo involved a large scale filming production and a documentary as well as several different formats (steel case DVD, Picture disc vinyl, etc).

The senjutsu box was just too dear. I think it was in the region of 80 to 100 euros when it came out, and it only had the album and the WOTW video making-of in it. The AMOLAD deluxe CD had the same content as that more or less, and it was the same price or thereabouts as the regular CD. If you're going to charge a 100 quid, you have to put a 100 quids worth of content in it.

Saying that, they sold thousands of the FC box.

Just looking over the ed force one tags thread and it makes you think. We’ve been talking about will they or won’t they release this new doc on dvd/blu ray and then into the subject of any dvd/blu ray and how the band and Rod don’t think they’ll sell enough to make it worthwhile.

If Maiden can sell thousands of bits of a plane at €66.66 a pop then surely this tells them they have a rabid customer base who will buy anything the band puts out so make a nice little boxset on dvd/blu ray and it’s sure to sell.
 
I wish they would release this kind of stuff before the tour starts, like they did in 2005 and 2008. Watching The Early Days and Live After Death before the gigs I went to really enhanced the experience (I wasn’t as interested in Maiden England). I’m guessing this is deliberate since the documentary has been in the works since... 2022? It makes me wonder if this is the only project they have planned for 2026. Looking back, the 2007-2009 period was executed perfectly - both in terms of tour dates and physical releases. It got a bit tiresome by the end, but overall, it was done really well.

IIRC, it's been in the works since before 2022. And we don't know if the band will release any more stuff to celebrate the anniv this year (merch, right), let alone for 2026. Maybe they'll release it after this year's leg of the tour because they'll release a live video from TFP next month! Why not. Let's hope so.

I think someone said it here. Wasn't there a photo with Dave Lights? Also, Steve's thanks in the liner notes of the latest album. Lots of people are involved, right.

Aaand maybe that's why they don't want to be that creative with such stuff, they can for sure with artworks and stuff. For albums CD package too.

There's a chance, why not. I guess they're saving some stuff for later. The first big production release since 2012 sounds wrong for a band like Maiden, I have to say.

I know the documentary project was in the cards for a long. long time, and I hope the management will do everything to make it big and worth of waiting for. That should be an opportunity to make a big hype around the band and attract even more fans especially if we think about forthcoming shows booking for 2026.
