DISCLAIMER: I start this thread because of the discussion about Ghost in the Maiden tour thread. I chose Ghost here again, because they (or rather parts of their fanbase) are a very good example for what I am trying to say. Of course, most of my points also apply to a whole bunch of other bands...

Maiden HAVE one Gimmick. Ghost RELY on SEVERAL gimmicks. Huge and obvious difference. In their early days, Eddie wasn't that prominent, it was a minor gag at their Shows which became bigger as the band grew. Eddie played a role in their success, but people didn't go to Maiden gigs to see...

Death Metal??! I agree that some Maiden artworks look more aggressive than the albums sound, but Death Metal? I never saw gore, misogynism, political content, violent porn or strong satanic imagery on Maiden albums.

You are not wrong. For me, it doesn't matter much, because I frankly think that many Maiden solo sections "suffer" from randomness. The solos as such are mostly awesome, but the riffs that lie beneath them are often throwaway riffs that sound very random and detached from the rest of the song...

I think the production gets too much heat as well. They wanted to strip it down, which was a good decision in theory, given the musical direction of the album. Unfortunately they went a step too far and ended up with a sound that had too little punch. However, it still sounds better than XF and...

Neither of those albums is among my top pics, but I would chose BTR over AIH any day. It's not even the best Annihilator album. Then again, BTR isnt the best Sepultura album either.
