They almost went back to interesting guitar work as "late" as on The Final Frontier on at least two occasions:
- the bit after "I'm a soldier of war" ("Mother of Mercy")
- the dissonant guitar chord between the verses of "The Talisman".
...
And then the "cool stuff" went dormant again. ;)
Technically true, since Skunkworks was released in early 1996, featuring a band he had been playing with since late 1994 (which makes one year and a half "only"). But if I remember well, the touring was more consistent back then.
Well, "The King For A Thousand Years" did for sure. "The Invisible Man" is allegedly a top-tier happy metal song as well. But I agree the album has its fillers too.
