News Burning Ambition Documentary

True, although one could argue that grunge was one of the reasons Bruce wanted to leave the band. He wanted to be cool and not a has-been…
The Skunkworks haircut was the moment of truth. I remember in 1996, one of my non-metal female classmates said 'oooh, he looked really nice', after Bruce's TV appearance on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Bearing in mind this was a 13 year pop fan who routinely mocked Maiden.

I shouldn't mock it, I had the same hairdo! (90s curtains)

Am I the only one who finds the Instagram clips of Eddie in the cinema to promote the documentary rather embarrassing? Having a zombie wielding an axe and acting in a rather moronic way is quite removed from the weighty lyrics that @Helmuth Von Moltke talks about in the documentary!

Finally saw it today. Nothing too mindblowing in terms of never-heard-before information but it was solid almost 2 hours of pure pleasure. I enjoyed the things I saw already and the ones I saw for the first time. I think my favourite bit was the minutes they spent on playing in Poland behind the Iron Curtain. Euros well spent!

Was nice seeing the band on the big screen, but we know the story. Definitely a vehicle to potentially get any casual fan more invested into the band.

Agreed!

The random Eddie segues were a bit clunky - I still don't know what purpose the Eddie vs. punks in Thatcher masks with machine guns really served.

I found that one particularly puzzling. I can imagine the conversation between Ben Smallwood and his dad during the production of the film:

Ben: "And we then have Eddie shooting Margaret Thatcher..."
Rod: "We cannot fookin' have that, we loved her policies!"
Ben: "But you had her murdered by Eddie and spent most of the 80s living as tax exiles!"
Rod: "What are you fookin's saying? Kids these days! You do not have a fookin' clue! We loved her and the cover was just a gimmick to get more publicity!"
Ben: "What shall we do then?"
Rod: "Let's have Eddie shooting some fookin' punks wearing masks. Steve hates them!"

And the rest, as they say, is history.

It's funny when you imagine him going "Nooooo, that's too bloody violent" to the first suggestion then going "Bloody brilliant" to the second. :D

So it's on Amazon Prime to buy for £15.99.

There are two extras. Spoilers below, I suppose...

A 22min Di Anno interview. No talking head, rather it's a montage of photos and live footage. It's good, he seems happy and excited for the future. Which is kinda sad considering he died soon after (I think). He says that leaving Maiden was the best thing he ever did because it allowed him to get clean. He speaks highly of Gene and Paul from Kiss, says that Gene would get him in a headlock and tell him to stop spending all of his money. I assume this means that Gene was trying to encourage Paul not to buy drugs every night. I suppose the free drugs come when you're the headliner.

Then there's an unreleased edit of Tears of a Clown from The Book of Souls tour, labelled as being from 2026-2017. Good attention to detail. Seems like a strange addition. The thumbnail for this is a photo of Clive behind the kit. Also strange. Daves guitar solo is super low in the mix, like the original official video release, I think. Surely if they bothered to re-edit the video it wouldn't be too much trouble to turn the guitar up a notch during one solo. But hey, what the fuck do I know, I'm only a human with ears.

I was alerted to this by a post on Paul's Facebook page. It showed the Tears of a Clown/Clive thumbnail and said that the "Clive story will bring tears to your eyes." So I dunno if there was supposed to be a Clive feature that got pulled and swapped for Tears but they didn't change the thumbnail or if the people at the Di Anno page just saw Clives pic and assumed that it was a tale of Clive.

And I'm just noticing that the Di Anno interview thumbnail is a fuckin live shot with Bruce. Shoddy, shoddy, shoddy. 1000069795.jpg

Apparently Gene did more than this to keep Paul solvent: he actually acted as his banker and doled out his pocket money daily:

(It's the 15th November 2004 interview but you may have to scroll down to it as the link at the top seems to just go to the home page at the moment.)

lol, no. If you wanna watch it buy it. Don’t ask people who’ve already bought it to upload it on YT so others can watch for free. All kinds of wrong.
Come on…. Man. Didn’t you use torrentz back in the day before streaming apps. Of course I have subscriptions to all 5 major services but want it to watch now before my 60th something gig in Amsterdam :)
