Top 5 songs that aren't metal or even loosely associated with metal?

Not looking for anything here that is metal or a similar genre e.g emo, goth, grunge, punk etc? What are the five songs that when you are in a more enlightened mood arouse your senses??

1: Gary Moore - Still Got the Blues (yes i know gary has a hard rock background but blues aint metal mo'fo!!)

2: U2 - Where the Street Have no Name. Great band, believe in their music, make political statements not becuase it's trendy but because they believe in what they are saying.

3: Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana (probably more down to the memories I have of an encounter with a girlfriend whilst this played in the background!!)

4: Prince - Purple Rain. Small man, big talent.

5: Massive Attack - Teardrop

Now that’s very difficult. I will mention 4 bands, but some of these tracks could easily be topped by others of the same band. I really like these bands for their long and in some cases diverse discographies.

Random order:

Dire Straits – Sultans of Swing (I love many live versions but the studio version still rocks most!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkrWqpymXLY

Midnight Oil – several songs but from most no clips so now I’ll choose “Put Down That Weapon” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfhRMsgCZzU

Pink Floyd – Sorrow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjMWP1w-I6w

Saga – We’ll Meet Again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3UD5ZqwHEY

1. Ocean Cloud - Marillion

2. Gazpacho - Marillion

3. Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode

4. Tired of Sleeping - Suzanne Vega

5. Time Machine - Joe Satriani

Hmm...

1. Jean Michel Jarre - Equinox IV
2. Genesis - Jesus He Knows Me
3. Pink Floyd - One Of These Days
4. Cliff Eidelman - Overture (Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country)
5. Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing

In no particular order, with no more than one song per band:

Frank Zappa - "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary"
Pink Floyd - "Time"
Genesis - "Firth of Fifth"
Jethro Tull - "Thick as a Brick"
Yes - "Siberian Khatru"

That's almost ninety minutes of music right there.

"Loosely associated" was interpreted as to make prog rock eligible for inclusion. Otherwise, I'd have Tangerine Dream's "Cinnamon Road" and maybe Autechre's "Montreal" in there somewhere.

I tried to avoid, Rock, Metal, Glam and all that.

hmmm tricky.

Men At Work - Land Down Under. (Don't Ask, Childhood Fave)
Gustav Holst - Jupiter The Bringer Of Jollity
Bloc Party - Flux
Motion City Soundtrack - Antonia
Motion City Soundtrack - Even If It Kills Me

In that case, Rush would be prominent in my list as well.

But Rush, in contrary to Genesis or Pink Floyd, are usually associated with the hard rock world. There's even quite a few record stores that file them under hard 'n' heavy.

As for my list....

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

No, I'm too macho to list the rest. :p

I almost included Rush instead of Yes or Jethro Tull, but due mainly to the fact that I couldn't think of a distinctly non-metal Rush song I prefer to the ones I listed, they didn't make it. Still in my top three bands though.

But I'll have a go without considering rock music at all, still keeping it to one song per artist:

Frank Zappa - "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary"
Tangerine Dream - "Cinnamon Road"
Autechre - "Montreal"
Jean-Michel Jarre - "Oxygene (Part IV)"
DJ Shadow - "The Number Song"

Well, these bands (apart from Pink Floyd) are in my hardrock and heavy metal encyclopedia, so that's how I was brought up with that. I think it depends on how you look at those bands. I find them all connected to hard rock, more than Grunge or punk bands are. In the record stores I usually don't see a different treatment between Rush, Yes and JT. Mostly, either all in hard'n'heavy, either none in that category.

Maybe there are more metalfans who like Rush than Genesis or Jethro Tull, but this has simply to do with the current succes of these bands. Rush is by far the most active and succesful band these days, selling out tours, basically they have as much exposure as Maiden, perhaps even more. They hardly had any low point in their career (succeswise).

Back to the music, personally I can't say that Rush's style is more metal than Yes or Jethro Tull. Rush's musical style has changed substantially over the years so it's hard to point out there style with only one term. If I did I'd never say hard rock. I'd rather say progressive rock. Just like Yes and Genesis.

However, all those bands inspired hardrock / metal bands. So in the end, from a historical and musical point of view I find it a bit awkward to say: Tull, Yes & Genesis: yes & Rush: no. Just my 2 cents.

Our Lady Peace - Starseed
Barenaked Ladies - If I Had A Million Dollars
Boston - Piece of Mind
John Williams, Score from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Duel of the Fates
John Williams, Score from Raiders of the Lost Ark - The Raider's March

I neither said anything about inspiration nor about the style of music. I only mentioned "objective" criteria, such as filing in record stores, coverage in hard rock magazines and so forth. And in that case, it's an undeniable fact that Rush are more associated with the hard rock world than Genesis, at least from my experience. Whether it's justified or not is another (subjective) case.
I also didn't say that you shouldn't include them in your list, I just wanted to point it out.

Keith Urban, Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me
Pat Green, Southbound 35
Big Country, In A Big Country
Depeche Mode, Somebody
Any 70's porn music--bow chica bow wow, chica chica bow bow

ok, sorry, Pink Floyd, One Of These Days (preferably live)

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Robbie Williams - Feel
Elton John - Circle of Life
Sting - Russians

I stayed away as much as possible from rock and also classical music.

The more active (and the bigger) a band, the more coverage, so I don't find that the strongest argument.

Speaking about the Hard'n'heavy section I don't see Rush often in that category to be honest, but I guess that differs per country/city/store.

Anyway, now I'll stop being stubborn. Please mention some more tracks mate, I am curious for thy choices!   :)

It was really just an excuse for not being sure what else to list. ;)

Anyway, it could go something like this:

Joan Baez - Diamonds And Rust
Bob Dylan - Masters Of War
Simon And Garfunkel - Sounds Of Silence
The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
The Chieftains - The Long Black Veil (a traditional, I know, but I prefer this version to any other I've known)

But that's a "time of the day" thing. As a matter of fact, I listen to very much non-metal/hard rock stuff, so it's very hard for me to come up with five songs.

tooo many  :ninja:

this isn't a "definitive" list. More 5 random songs that i really like.

Thom Yorke - Skip Divided
Radiohead - Jigsaw Falling into Place
Aphex Twin - Boy/Girl song
Ian Brown - Gravy Train
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues

That was more difficult than i thought

Alright, after much agonizing thought:

The Cult - Sweet Soul Sister
RHCP - Dosed
RHCP - Snow
Phil Collins - Another Day in Paradise
Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers

I think this is right, it kind of feels right.
