Eddies Wingman said:That's maybe a little surprising? Usually MoP gets more mention, both among media, critics and fans, so I would guess MoP was the people's choice.
Now, I'm more in keeping with the trend you noticed in this thread - Ride The Lightning is my favourite Metallica album, and well inside the top 10 of all metal albums I have listened to.

Genghis Khan said:Let's not try and extend the results of this thread onto the rest of the world. It is hardly representative of Metallica fans, or casual fans at large.
Eddies Wingman said:That's just my point. The results here differ from what I would expect if the poll had been done among a representative selection of Metallica fans (with representative, I mean that the selection should include the whole range of fans, from those who think Metallica sold out even before The Black Album to those who actually became fans because of the black album, to those who go to concerts only to hear "One" and "Enter Sandman").
Genghis Khan said:Just to make my case clear, I was not necessarily speaking of Metallica when I made the above comment. As I've never been to a Metallica concert, I do not know how the fans behave. I was thinking of a different band actually (not Maiden either).
Wingman, what is your opinion on different Metallica 'eras'? Personally, I love the thrash albums better than their 90s material, and I do not care for the Loads or the one with the orchestra.
Eddies Wingman said:Now, I've never been much into the Metallica of the 90's. I didn't grow up listening to them, I took interest in them after being introduced to hard rock and metal by AC/DC and Maiden. I felt it naturally to start with the "classic" Metallica albums, so I bought Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets. Liked them instantly, and got myself the other two 80's albums.
As a matter of fact, I don't own any post-AJFA albums, although I've listened to the others as well. I think the Black Album is good, but it is quite different from the four first. More refined production, more radio-friendly songs and so on. It should be pointed out that before I heard through the entire Black Album, I'd heard a lot about it - most of it negative (because it came from fans of their early material) - and I was actually surprised in a positive way. I had of course heard NEM, Sandman and Unforgiven before, but the rest wasn't as bad as I had expected.
Load and ReLoad are to me two quite dull albums. They're too long - both could have been cut down to 50-60 minutes and would not have suffered from it. Some good songs, but lots of really boring stuff as well.
St. Anger should be seen as an "era" on its own, and I've never really liked it. I think, like many others, that their latest effort is a very huge step forwards compared to St. Anger, and I look forward to hearing a couple of DM songs live.
But to me, Metallica were at their best from 1984 to 1990. Too bad I was just a kid back then and didn't have the chance to see them. Well, they are still said to kick ass live.
