I think it's a preposition in that context. A conjunction connects two words or phrases together and "for" is usually used as a co-ordinating conjunction and defines purpose between two syntactically equal ideas. Unfortunately, in the case of the sentence above, there is nothing to connect. Conjunctions only connect.
