Finntroll - Under Bergets Rot
Gojira - Born In Winter
Soilwork - As We Speak
Testament - Over The Wall
Wintersun - Beyond The Dark Sun
 
Very good round considering I've basically never heard these songs before.

Finntroll - It's actually pretty goofy. Reminds me of a cross between a demented circus / clowns and a ghost house. I guess it's the folk parts in there.
Gojira - Probably my least favourite of the bunch, but it's still quite good.
Soilwork - Now this is a great song. Combines clean vocals plus some screams really well. Great playing and melodies.
Testament - Riffing is great, not huge on the vocal style.
Wintersun - Again good guitar work, decent vocal style but I feel the end is way too abrupt.

Votes go to Soilwork and Finntroll

Five songs I've never heard before
Finntroll was great fun musically, like UO says, a demented circus. Vocals bad, but I've heard worse growls.
Gojira seems long for a short song. Intro is rather hypnotic, the heavier parts don't do it for me.
Soilwork — nice composition and changes. Not a big fan of the verse melodies.
Testament — all it really offers is intensity.
Wintersun — Nice riffing and composition.

None of these are really in my wheel house because of the vocals.
But Soilwork and Wintersun are solid songs and get my votes.
 
I didn't pay attention to the Testament link because I know the song from before, but the one in the link sounds way different than the original version that appeared on The Legacy. This one is way dryer than the original. Vocals sound drastically different as well.


This is the actual Over the Wall. I'm not saying it'll matter, but I for one, would not have voted for Over the Wall if the one NP posted was the original. It's way worse.

I nominated the song for the game and I prefer the re-recording because the song is heavier, and vocals and production are much better. But iryo!

Anyway, I put Finntroll into the game because there weren't many wacky songs like this one. I think it's quite unique and fun.
I love this Gojira song, so it gets my 1st vote. Although it's a shame that the best Gojira songs are too long for Short Songs game and too short for War Of Epics :(
I discovered As We Speak through this game during the cutting process and loved it. I wasn't a big fan of Soilwork before I heard this song (only heard second to last album iirc), but after hearing this one I went through their older albums and there's a lot of great material there. 2nd vote goes to Soilwork!
Testament... not really a big fan of this band. I don't think they are bad, but they lack something to make them great... Most of their material is kinda bland... nothing too bad, but nothing too memorable either. Kinda like their thrash buddies Exodus or Anthrax. They are the best when they get really heavy/death metallish, like in this re-recordings album.
Wintersun - this is their only eligible non-interlude song, and it's a great song, although their longer stuff is better.
 
I'm not going to argue against that Testament sound best when they're really heavy. The Gathering is likely their best album. But I think that re-recording album is the worst thing they've ever done.
 
I actually like all of them and would happily transfer my voting allocation from other rounds if it was allowed :) Testament was third choice, largely on the back of that instrumental section.
 
The Testament was actually pretty good, one of their better songs.
