So the other day I got the urge to listen to some early Sabbath, when I realized that I've never really explored Heavy Metal in terms of years. i.e. I've never listened to just albums from 1980. I imagine I'd get a different sense of context when listening to Heaven and Hell, British Steel, and Iron Maiden back to back to back. I've done full discography listens of a lot of these bands, but never explorations of different eras. So I decided I'd start doing just that. Using Black Sabbath's first album as a benchmark, I'd go year to year starting with 1970 and listen to both classic/essential albums from each year as well as some hidden gems. Hopefully this not only gives me new context for albums I already know well, but also helps me find new appreciation for some and maybe discover some that I missed. This will also help me get more into genres that I'm less familiar with (mainly extreme metal genres). I plan on doing this slowly so i can fully digest what I hear.

I decided to make a thread for it so others can join in to discuss these classic albums and maybe suggest albums that I miss along the way. I'm sure I'll gloss over somebody's favorite at least once. :D It'll be like a discography discussion, but we're doing years. So without further ado, here are the albums I've selected for 1970:

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath/Paranoid
Deep Purple - In Rock
Hawkwind - Hawkwind
Led Zeppelin - III
Uriah Heep - Very 'eavy... Very 'umble

I've already listened to both Sabbath albums as that's what started this all. While you can hardly argue against Black Sabbath being the first Metal song, I think Paranoid has to be the first Metal album. The bulk of the first Sabbath album has a lot more of that blues/psychedelic flavor that Sabbath started out with. The riffs aren't quite as prominent yet. Paranoid on the other hand is darker, heavier, doomier, and all around more of what I would define as Metal. But that's all semantics. Paranoid still remains tied with Heaven and Hell as my favorite Sabbath albums, and an all time favorite in general.

Cool. I've actually done this sort of stuff quite a lot ie. hit up a specific year and then dig into various genres be it psych, hard rock or metal. 1970 is a good year to begin with!

Deep Purple In Rock is a milestone. Speed King and Flight of the Rat are straight rockers. Child in Time is spooky but powerful.

Led Zep 3 is a very experimental LP but one of my favorites. From the drive of Immigrant Song and Out On the Tiles to the acoustics of Friends and Gallows Pole to the strange lick that runs through Celebration Day and the classic blues of Since I Been Loving You, it is a great album.

Very cool idea, Mosh. I did this recently for 1980 on my Facebook review page - www.facebook.com/TheDuellists - shameless plug - and the results were very interesting. Choosing only 5 or so albums will get harder and harder once you hit 1980. :)

I'm slowly going through Deep Purple's discography, so this will be really interesting for me.

Are you planning on doing every year (1971, 72, etc) or just every 5 or 10 years?

I actually won't be limiting the albums I choose, I'm just going off of Rate Your Music and wikipedia and this year happened to have only 5 albums I thought were necessary for this. If there are some I've missed let me know!

I'll do every year, there are a lot of seminal years for Metal (76, 82 etc) that will deserve attention. I want to be as thorough as possible.

I'm listening to III now, I was really into Zeppelin when I was 14 or so but never really got around to this album. It's definitely transitional for them, shows them experimenting for the first time really. While it contains their heaviest song so far (Immigration Song), the album as a whole is a bit less heavy than the two before it. There's definitely more of a folk element present, which would pop up frequently in Zep's work going forward. I will probably only include III and IV in this thread, as I don't really consider the other albums influential for metal the way the first four albums are, so I'd rather focus more attention on other albums. I've considered Presence because of Achille's Last Stand, but that's just one song.

Love Achille's Last Stand! The last song on Presence (Tea For One) is another great blues song. Physical Graffitti is a great combination of rockers with lighter songs

@Mosh I personally haven't heard it yet, but I've heard Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come described as one of the first heavy metal albums ever released.

Pretty safe to say that there is A LOT of fantastic albums from these years that are not metal......

But let's not steal this topic right? ;)

I think he was just suggesting moving to the Survivor Discussion thread because this was meant to be a discussion of the five albums Mosh posted above.

Not sure what is happening, but this is meant to be a Metal project only. I understand that other genres of music would be fun too, but it would be quite ambitious and I started this as a personal project to put a different spin on the first genre of music I came to love.

I intend on doing this with other genres I like sometime in the future, but felt I'd share the metal one here as its most appropriate for this forum.
