37: The Nomad - Brave New World (Murray, Harris)
@MrKnickerbocker first rated this a 4, and then followed up with a 10.
I heard this song a while before it was actually released as a single. It was a very bad mp3 recording, but it was enough to blow me away the first time I heard it. Needless to say I bought the single and then the album the day it came out. Back then I found it to be a brilliant song, and even today it still stands as a good one and a great opener to BNW. Later I discovered that radio edit version with the additional lines in the chorus, which I like even better than the album version. I wonder why they did those two versions?
I really like this one as an opener, great energy to start the show and the ohhhh-ohhh-ohhhhhhhhhhhhs towards the end. Best since either Moonchild or Aces High and better IMO than what followed (though I have not seen the TFF opener live yet, but I sense Wicker Man will still be better).
I want to point out Nicko's drumming. That "double" bass (which is a single bass) in the chorus is awesome. Lots of subtle accents as well, throughout the whole song. I had to get used to the sharp snare drum sound, which is pretty dominant in the production.
It was pretty different, but also felt like that good old jeans the first time I heard this song. It's a modern Iron Maiden, 3 guitars in their precise spots, Adrian and Bruce comin' back with new experiences, new influences and new approaches to the music, in general, which they applied to Maiden, both technically and musically. It's said to be a proposital Priest rip off the intro, but it's a coincidence, for sure. Bruce soars on this song, bringing back the power and the carachter Maiden had lost, Adrian's guitar work was still splendid, but different from the Adrian we knew from the 80's, as he showcased on the wonderful solo he plays in this song.
When I first heard this song, I didn't think it was that great, and though that the sound was kind of cluttered with the 3 guitars. Now however, I like how the 3 guitars work together with Adrian and Bruce back in the helm. Great vocal performance and great lyrics also help lift the song. This song is definitely the best opener in the reunion period, but it seems that I don't like it as much as everyone else.
If you are going to make a comeback, this is the way to do it. I love the energy and drive to this song. Lyrically it works for me. It was a successfully updated sound. Different but familiar. The hook is eerie to me but in a good way. I always enjoy listening to this song. It is still probably my favorite or at least one of my favorites of the newer albums
The whole solo is a bit messily performed. I think it has to do with that "not striving for perfection" mentality Maiden has when recording.
It is a song built for the stage, with a sing-a-long chorus and and ending full of “whoa-oh” chants. The band still uses this song as their opener quite often because it is a perfect introduction: fast, melodic, fun, and catchy. The return of Bruce and Adrian injects new life into the band and it can be heard in every second of The Wicker Man.
Maidenfans disagrees.I third that. Wasted Years is Top 20 at the lowest.
One of Maiden's best ever. This song is almost like an orgasm.
That intro does sort of annoy me a bit but overall I do think it's brilliant espcially the guitar work and the part where it picks up and Janick does that brilliant solo.
This song has a lot to offer, but it’s not one for the ADD crowd. It demands a lot of patience to fully appreciate. There are times when it comes on and I hit the fast-forward. But when I’m in the right mood…wow! It just builds so slowly and gradually by time you are full gallop mode you have no idea how you got there. Nine some days, seven others.
Intro doesn't fit. It's nicely done on RiR because of Nicko's banging drum sound. Great song - however i'm not too fond of instrumental section. It's nice but not on par with the main part.
by far my least favorite reunion era song and one of my very least favorite Maiden songs in general. The beginning comes out of nowhere sounding vaguely like something off one Killers but that tone sadly is not revisited. This song has always felt like one big build up with a payoff that's not entirely worth it. At least to me. And again with the laborious repetition.
I really dislike the intro, but the rest of the song is jjust teriffic. Great breakdown sections, terrific vocals, and interesting lyrics.
This is one song that's only just clicked with me. When I first listened to it when I started to listen to Maiden, I disliked the intro, it just felt disjointed. And as a result, I never gave it my full attention until I watched Rock In Rio once again about a month ago. My god, I don't know what happened but it gave me chills, particuarly the final "oh oh" section.
Dream of Mirrors is the longest epic and most progressive song on the album. No punches are pulled introducing the track. Bruce wails away with the full band from the get-go, allowing the first half of the song to pull back and slowly build itself up into a brilliant slab of dynamics, tempo shifts, and time changes. The lyrics are impressive in their stark simplicity, discussing man’s inability to truly understand or alter the course of dreams. It’s almost the sequel to Seventh Son’s Infinite Dreams and even shares some almost identical lyrics.
Maybe his greatest short tracks, but you are forgetting about the Smith epics.Adrian's Smith's three greatest tracks below the Top 20...
Just for some comparison here, this is the list I compiled from the site a few weeks ago. I've got it in spoilers so it doesn't crash overrun anyone's screen (and so LooseCannon doesn't think I'm trying to usurp his thread ), but this is the reason I'm so surprised by a lot of the song rankings on here.

Great retorics!Yeah but yours is wrong.
Nah, seriously though, Empire is my third favorite Maiden song, so in other words I love the thing. Could easily be considered the 'greatest' Maiden song ever. It's epic in every sense of the word.
Great retorics!
Its epic for the sake of being epic. To obvious to work for me. Its like with the FFDP fan base, to like something just because you are overdoing it.
FFDP? Are you comparing Empire of the Clouds to Five Finger Death Punch...?
It's epic because it's epic. That's what epic things do. I don't understand disliking something that's epic simply because it's too epic. That doesn't make any sense. You can dislike a song for musical reasons, that's totally fine, but disliking an epic simply for being an epic is like saying you dislike War and Peace because it's just to book-y of a book. Like it's a book for the sake of being a book.
