Forostar Conjure the Death Star again

As the opener of the topic I hope I have something to say about it.

The info is not the same. The older posts are (for me at least) interesting to keep, because we can compare with the past. Back then, Janick had written more songs for Maiden than Adrian (who would have thought that?), and now look at the current situation.  :)

No, man, for God's sake keep this incredible info you compiled and all the other posts on the thread! :D

  3. Travis The Dragon

Travis The Dragon The dreamers may die, but the dreams live on.

My topic is different because I'm wondering specifically who writes the lyrics and music separately.

Forostar Conjure the Death Star again

2015 Update (and 21000th post ;) ). The songs in italic have never been released as regular album songs.

In recent years we've seen comments from members from the seventies that they have contributed as well. Also the ex-drummer of Beckett commented told this forum that Iron Maiden used elements of their songs. For their sake, I hope they'll get credit someday. I haven't made an overview of the disputed songs. For now, this is an overview of how Iron Maiden have credited their songs.

    Great work Foro :)

If you do include 'disputed' song credits, don't forget To Tame a Land, with the mid section clearly based on Asturias by Isaac Albeniz, as mentioned in the commentary.

    Srogyy Ancient Mariner

    Great summary, thanks!

You're welcome guys. And Welsh, cheers for that vid, I don't think I ever heard that "original"!

Yeah, thank you very much for that.

What I find really weird... I love Powerslave. The riff, the lyrics, the instrumental section (one of the best moments of solo-harmony-solo in Maiden's career, in fact) and... the sole writer is Bruce? WTF? I mean, I don't want to underestimate him, but he's a singer, his playing abilities are very limited if I'm correct, yet he's the only author. Did he hum all of the parts to the others? Weird.

Same goes for Revelations (yes, beside that plagiarism in that song that's been mentioned already).

Also, I have it confirmed now that Janick's probably the most adventurous and "progressive" songrwriter, at least in my book.

Hey Foro, I am pretty sure Sanctuary was originally credited to 'Iron Maiden' when it was first released as a single back in 1980, so as it was on Metal For Muthas first does that include Doug Sampson? (just to add to the confusion!)

  10. Black Bart

    Black Bart Ancient Mariner

Without being instrumentally gifted, I think Bruce is quite capable as a songwriter. It is possibly also because "Powerslave", "Revelations" or "Tears of the Dragon" for example are not necessarily difficult to play. On the other hand, he wouldn't have been able to come up with the riffs of "Back in the village" or "Be Quick or Be Dead" I guess.

@Welsh Phantom @Black Bart @Srogyy @JudasMyGuide I tagged you guys, in case you wonder where the thread has gone: I asked to have it moved, because I thought the Commentary Discussion is a better home.

Thanks! You're correct about the single, but I do see other info on the net about Metal for Muthas (Harris!). So the confusion becomes bigger! :)
Do you have a source that says "Iron Maiden" for this release? I will make some changes in the list, later.

Haven't checked all versions but on the single, and versions on the debut album, I see Iron Maiden until 1995.
    In 1995 and I see Harris / Murray / Di'Anno or Harris / Di'Anno / Murray

I have two 7" vinyl's and a 12" of Sanctuary, all from 1980, so I will check them tomorrow.
Too late to dig them out now (feel free to remind me if I forget) ;)

I also have a cassette of Metal for Muthas, but that may take some finding!

The main riff to "Powerslave" is actually quite simple. I remember being able to play it in my first week on the guitar.

Bruce has always been by far the best lyricist in Maiden, so no surprises about that. One of the better lyricists in rock/metal.

Highly doubt he wrote the mid-section. Guitar solos and basslines are never credited in rock/metal and that section consists of a guitar solo being backed up by a bassline.

Ok, I found my cassette of Metal For Muthas, and it states Harris as the sole songwriter for both Sanctuary and Wrathchild. I checked the vinyls of Sanctuary (which came out later in 1980) and they state 'Iron Maiden' as the authors ... so definitely some contradiction on Sanctuary at least.

Below are scans of the cassette, but I did not want to risk scanning the vinyls in (they are probably available on the net somewhere).

Hope that helps (to muddy the situation lol)
