Thanks, Forostar! Sometimes I crawl out from the rock I've been hiding under, but it usually takes a shout out in my direction to get me off my arse! :) Semi-related, there were some clips of Adrian jamming on some AC/DC songs up on YouTube, but they got yanked pretty quickly. I think he did...

(responding to Gabriel174): Oh man, it's been 24 years and my memory sucks! Getting old is not fun. :) Besides "Back In The Village" and "Wasted Years," I would say they (The Untouchables) played the 3 songs in the video above ("Big Trouble," "Singin' The Blues," and "Judgement Day"), but at...

I'm in complete agreement with no5- would LOVE to see Adrian do more side projects and with a variety of people. I think you mean Matt Barlow (ex Iced Earth) and that would be a GREAT pairing. I enjoyed his IE work and love his voice. And, I am also MORE interested in what Adrian might do on...

    Primal Rock Rebellion

For months and months now, I've put Awoken Broken into "cold storage." Not because I don't like the album (I LOVE it!), but because I think I tend to overlisten to some albums, which makes them more routine or unremarkable than they really are, OR (oddly opposite) I will give it too much of a...

Good posts, everyone! I'll touch on Rush (briefly, Ariana)- I got into them in the 1970s (thanks to my older brothers) and where I think Lifeson and Adrian connect is in note choice, phrasing, and (up until Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures) tone. Around the time of "Red Barchetta,"...

(re: Dave's apparent passivity) I think it's just a matter of personality type. When you see a video or a picture of Dave, 8 times out of 10, he's smiling. 1 time out of 10 he's probably doing a photo session and they want a "serious" look from him. He seems to live in a perpetual state of...

Less balance, i.e.- most of the information discussed will be about 1 Iron Maiden member, not all of them. Objectivity (or a lessening thereof)- As Adrian fans, and human beings, we'll tend to overstate his contributions, emphasize the better aspects of his playing, and downplay some of the...

    Adrian Smith

I think I was vague enough in my "bass strings" comment- "one thing Adrian did try to introduce into the Maiden sound was the drop tuning you'll hear on a few songs (I think Run To The Hills was one particular example). I think he's playing "The Molossian"- the Jackson King V with the bass...

I think the culprit is Adrian's pale yellow/white (?) Strat- when he plays it the sound is drop-tuned, to my old, dumb ears. I withdraw my earlier Molossian comment, may it please the jury. ;)

Alright, I just watched "Wrathchild" and it sure sounds like Adrian is in drop-tuning. But, he's using his Strat, so probably no Molossian. I'll keep looking/listening.

I could hear that it was downtuned but I haven't watched RiR in years, so I added just that he *might* have used the Molossian on that recording. I'm looking now, but again, it could *just* be his King V w/o the bass string. Now, I don't recall hearing any drop-tuning in Maiden beyond this RiR...

I liked hearing this bit of RiR, warts and all. Like Ariana, I never claim to be wholly objective, but the historian in mean strives for that. I still think he plays well, but considering the circumstances (thanks Ariana) and the fact we cannot hear the other two guitarists, I think it's a bit...

Thanks for the heads up (re: Vosselaar), I'm checking that stuff out now! I've seen the Milan boot before, but I think TOTD got screwed up by numerous power outages. I saw Bruce/Adrian in 1997 in Chicago (hence the profile pic) and I think Roy took Dave's first solo on Powerslave. My memory...

    Adrian Smith

On "Limelight," I would have loved to hear his signature "crunch" (I'm thinking of the section on WTWWB post H/Davey solos, pre-Janick solo, "They make a tea and sit there waiting . . . ") on the intro and plus how he would handle the flowing bits ("Living the the limelight the universal dream ...

Ditto and likewise- I never thought Adrian had that much affinity for Rush, which is one of my fav bands from growing up listening to my older brothers blasting their stuff. I would have preferred to hear him on "Limelight" or "Working Man," but this is still good. Can't wait until it comes out!

Any Ideas On A New Album

I'm good with both (classic sound and progressive). It seems that they are shifting more toward the prog songs, the longer songs, though. Even Adrian has gotten into the act with Paschendaele and Isle of Avalon. It's good, though- it shows growth and there's no sense of complacency. The...

    Adrian Smith

The heaviness, in concert, of the P.M. stuff surprised me. Then again, weren't they opening for Maiden at this show? Perhaps that played into it and, only having a support slot, wanted to hit it hard-n-fast? I wish they had released "Demolition" as well. I agree with the earlier comment...

Any Ideas On A New Album

(re: Isle of Avalon and Starblind)- I didn't say they were setlist staples, I mentioned them because they "break out of the Maiden box"- i.e.- 4/4 time, a gallop. They've got the hallmarks of classic Maiden songs, especially the nice harmony section on Starblind, but both songs are not exactly...

CriedWhenBrucieLeft- there's lots of good non-Maiden Adrian stuff out there for you to dig into! Is it as strong as Maiden across the board? Not always, but there are magic moments, too. What I enjoy is the diversity of styles he will play and also his tone; especially on songs like Live To...
