Cool idea!

Off the top of my head, limited to no more than one per band, and no critical thinking involved at all:
Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden; from the album Number of the Beast)
Limelight (Rush; from the album Moving Pictures)
Don't Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult; from the album Agents of Fortune)
Book of Thel (Bruce Dickinson; from the album Chemical Wedding)
Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath, from the album Heaven and Hell)
Hells Bells (AC/DC, from the album Back in Black)
On and On (Michael Schenker Group; from the album MSG)
Underground (Angels; from the album Two Minute Warning)
Locked in the Trunk of a Car (Tragically Hip; from the album Fully, Completely)
The Green Manalishi (Judas Priest; from the album Unleashed in the East)

The Beatles - "Ticket to Ride" (Help!)
Brian Eno - "Julie With..." (Before and After Science)
Emilie Simon - "Song of the Storm" (La marche de l'empereur)
Frank Zappa - "Peaches En Regalia" (Hot Rats)
Iron Maiden - "Ghost of the Navigator" (Brave New World)
Jethro Tull - "Thick as a Brick" (uh...)
The Kinks - "Waterloo Sunset" (Something Else)
Pink Floyd - "See Emily Play" (single)
Porcupine Tree - "Fadeaway" (Up the Downstair)
Tom Waits - "Dirt in the Ground" (Bone Machine)

I don't know if I could ever make a list like this, too much to choose from. I know my #1 song is Octavarium by Dream Theater and that Isle Of Avalon is a close second, but that's about it.

This is an incredibly hard thing to ask indeed. Mood at the time has to be one of the biggest factors, as an example 'Angel' by Judas Priest is something I could quite easily see myself listing in one mood, but in another it wouldn't come remotely close!

I know a few that I could confidently say are going to be in there, although they've been at the top of my list so long it's possible that they're no longer my favourite to put on and I'm just stuck :p Interestingly my first thoughts for a top10 here include songs that are say #3 by an artist.. but not #1 by them :/ Which makes no sense.

A very (VERY) quick flick through my music collection grabbing songs out into a list has created:

#1 - W.A.S.P - The Idol
#2 - Bruce Dickinson - Jerusalem
#3 - Dio - As Long as it's Not About Love
#4 - UFO - Love to Love
#5 - W.A.S.P - Heaven's Hung in Black
#6 - Guns N' Roses - November Rain
#7 - Iron Maiden - Hallowed be Thy Name (Rock in Rio)
#8 - Guns N' Roses - Coma
#9 - Sabaton - The Art of War
#10 - Sixx:A.M - Live Forever

But I would suspect if I put a lot of time into it that a few of those would change, especially with mood.

I have trouble comparing genres against each other. Starblind is #1, that's all I know.

My top 10(and even my top 50) would be entirely Maiden, so it would make no sense listing it here. As for my non-Maiden top songs :
1/ Jethro Tull, Thick as a Brick
2/ Black Sabbath, War Pigs
3/ Dream Theater, Sacrified Sons
4/ Rush, Armor and Sword
5/ Slayer, Chemical Warfare
6/ Motörhead, Overkill
7/ Mastodon, The Czar
8/ Jefferson Airplane, White Rabbit
9/ Omen, Red Horizon
10/ Simon and Garfunkel, The Sound of Silence

1. Iron Maiden - Caught Somewhere in Time
2. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
3. Rainbow - Stargazer
4. Gamma Ray - Rebellion in Dreamland
5. Iced Earth - Travel in Stygian
6. Blaze - Stare at the Sun
7. Judas Priest - Night Crawler
8. Iced Earth - Pure Evil
9. AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
10. Helloween - Halloween

Honorable Mentions (no order)
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Blind Guardian - Mirror, Mirror
Bruce Dickinson - Jerusalem
Bruce Dickinson - Omega
Gamma Ray - Somewhere Out in Space
Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Metallica - Fade to Black
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Actually I could go on and on and on with these honorable mentions there's just so many damn good songs out there. There's probably another 50 songs that could easily go here, so before you send your hate mail, I'll say " That's a brilliant song too!"

I know Hallowed Be Thy Name is my No. 1. Iced Earth's Pure Evil, A Question Of Heaven and Dracula would also be in Top 10. The rest I dunno.

I've been in an Dream Theater mood recently

1. Iron Maiden - When the Wild Wind Blows (The Final Frontier)
2. Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name ( Flight 666)
3. Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera (Live After Death)

7. Iron Maiden - Dance of Death (Dance of Death)
8. Rainbow - Stargazer (Rising)
9. Dream Theater - Endless Sacrifice (Train of Thought)
10. Pink Floyd - Pigs (Animals)

3 Honorable Mentions in no particular order.
Megadeth - Hangar 18 (Rust in Peace)
Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper (Images and Words)
Metallica - The Unforgiven III (Death Magnetic)

Going to try to limit it to one per band here.

1: Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
2: Rainbow - Stargazer
3: Metallica - One
4: Judas Priest - The Sentinel
5: Iron Maiden - Aces High
6: Iced Earth - Travel In Stygian
7: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
8: Blue Oyster Cult - Veteran Of The Psychic Wars
9: Megadeth - Good Mourning Black Friday
10: Death - Empty Words

I imagine Paschendale would have sneaked in somewhere too.

I haven't thought about this for a long time so I''ll give it a try with whatever comes to mind right now. I'm not including Maiden songs because it wouldn't be fair.

1. Alter Bridge - Blackbird
2. Rainbow - Stargazer
3. Rory Gallagher - Bad Penny
4. Talisman - In Make Believe
5. Blaze - Stare At The Sun
6. Black Sabbath - When Death Calls
7. Skyclad - Land Of The Rising Slum
8. Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls
9. Bruce Dickinson - The Alchemist
10. Yngwie Malmsteen - On The Run Again

+ 2 more because of the Maiden related songs that slipped in.
11. Shinedown - Sound Of Madness
12. Dio - Sacred Heart

Limited to one per band? From the top of my head - probably these:

1. Dance of Death (Iron Maiden; from the album Dance of Death)
2. This Dying Soul: IV. Reflections of Reality (Revisited), V. Release (Dream Theater; from the album Train of Thought)

Please Don’t Judas Me (Nazareth; from the album Hair of the Dog)
My Last Words (Megadeth; from the album Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?)
Book of Thel (Bruce Dickinson; from the album The Chemical Wedding)
Night on a Bare Mountain (Mekong Delta; from the album Dances of Death (and Other Walking Shadows))
Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, Pt. II (King Crimson; from the album Larks’ Tongues in Aspic)
The Islander (Nightwish; from the album Dark Passion Play)
Crushing Day (Joe Satriani; from the album Surfing with the Alien)
Child in Time (Deep Purple; from the album Deep Purple in Rock)

(I hope I won't change my mind in the foreseeable future, though :D )

Would be something like this:

Burnin' Up (Priest, from "Hell Bent for Leather")
99 Ways to Die (Megadeth from "Hidden Treasures")
Reckoning Day (Megadeth from "Youthanasia")
Revelations (Maiden from "POM")

Plus another two hundred.

1. The Darkness - "Love is Only a Feeling" (Permission to Land, 2003)/"Last of our Kind", (Last of our Kind, 2015)
2. Dokken - "Heaven Sent" (Back for the Attack, 1987)
3. Mr. Big - "Fragile" (...The Stories We Could Tell, 2014)
4. Steve Harris - "Lost Worlds", (British Lion, 2012)

9. Accept - "Shadow Soldiers", (Stalingrad, 2012)
10. Cheap Trick - "The Flame" (Lap of Luxury, 1988)

If I could shoehorn in more, these would be high up the list:

Crazy Lixx - "Heroes Are Forever", (Loud Minority, 2007)
Melody Club - "Stranded Love", (Music Machine, 2002)
Blaze Bayley - "Stare at the Sun", (Silicon Messiah, 2000)

Tried to keep to one song per artist, or else there would only be The Darkness and Dokken songs on there, because I'm basically stuck on those bands for now... (Okay, I'd have to find a way to get "Fragile" in there anyway.) As it stands, it is a pretty representative list of what I listen to right now, and what I've listened to in the past.

My all-time top 10, limited to one track per artist and excluding Iron Maiden:
  1. Cathedral – Utopian Blaster (Carnival Bizarre, 1995)
  2. Amorphis – Drowned Maid (Tales from the Thousand Lakes, 1994)
  3. Bruce Dickinson – King in Crimson (The Chemical Wedding, 1998)

  6. Lightning Bolt – Dracula Mountain (Wonderful Rainbow, 2003)
  7. Nightstick – Ultimatum: Cut It Off, Then Kill It (Ultimatum, 1998)
  8. Nirvana - All Apologies (In Utero, 1993)
  9. Terrorvision – Some People Say (How To Make Friends and Influence People, 1994)
  10. A - I Love Lake Tahoe (A vs Monkey Kong, 1999)
I realise this makes it look like I don't listen to really new music. I do. Just nothing has entered my bloodstream like these tracks have.

Gonna take maximum one per band, gets a bit more fun that way.

1. King Crimson - Lizard
2. Iron Maiden - Lord of Light
3. Van Der Graaf Generator - La Rossa
4. Genesis - Musical Box
5. Jimi Hendrix - Bold As Love
6. Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
7. Peter Hammill - A Louse Is Not A Home
8. Camel - Nimrodel
9. Queensrÿche - Promised Land
10. Black Sabbath - Spiral Architect

Pretty sure some BoS song would fit here, but I'll let it age a bit more first.

1. Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone
2. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
3. Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna
4. Neil Young - Ambulance Blues
5. The Beatles - It's All Too Much
6. Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
7. Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
8. Lou Reed - Perfect Day
9. Grateful Dead - Ripple
10. Black Sabbath - Megalomania

Sorry, couldn't limit it to one artist. Also other than Maiden, Metallica and Slayer I am not much of a metal fan. Those three would have songs in the next ten.

One per artist; of the 10 artists I listen to most (except AC/DC but the song is that good):

AC/DC - "Thunderstruck"
Bon Jovi - "Born To Be My Baby"
Dream Theater - "The Spirit Carries On"
Electric Light Orchestra - "Telephone Line"
Firewind - "Tyranny"
Halestorm - "Dear Daughter"
Iron Maiden - "Empire Of The Clouds"
Judas Priest - "Hard As Iron"
Meat Loaf - "Out of The Frying Pan, Into The Fire"
Queen - "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy"
