My Essential Maiden

Check the Declination!

Working on my PHD in Maiden
OK, another Maiden list! For this list, I was trying to list what I would consider to be 10s on a scale of 10, masterpieces--and there are a lot. I guess if someone put me in charge of making a box set, or a really long "best of" with 4 or 5 CD's, this would be it.

From Iron Maiden: Sanctuary, Phantom of the Opera, Transylvania

Killers: Ides of March, Gengis Khan, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Innocent Exile, Killers

Number of the Beast: Invaders, Children of the Damned, Prisoner, Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name

Piece of Mind: Where Eagles Dare, Revalations, Flight of Icarus, Die With Your Boots On, Trooper, To Tame A Land

Powerslave: Aces High, 2 Minutes To Midnight, Losfer Words, Flash of the Blade, Back in the Village, Powerslave, Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Somewhere in Time: Wasted Years, Heaven Can Wait, Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

7th Son: Moonchild, Infinite Dreams, Evil that Men Do, Clairvoyant

No Prayer for the Dying: Tailgunner

Fear of the Dark: Be Quick or be Dead, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Fear of the Dark (Live Only)

NO BLAZIES even though I checked the Declination 101 times

Brave New World: Wicker Man

Dance of Death: Montsegur, Paschendale

MOLAD: Brighter than 1000 Suns, Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg

Final Frontier: Satellite 15/Final Frontier, El Dorado, Coming Home, Talisman

Thoughts/adjustments?

I hear you guys, I was trying to compose a list of what I considered "10's" and there were many that I left off that could justly be called "9.9s". If I included the 9.9s, we are talking about 2/3 of the bands entire output. Trust---Caught SIT, Sea of Madness and Stranger in a Strange Land were all in that 9.9 category. Trying to put a list like this together really reinforces that we are truly dealing with the Greatest Band of All Time here!

It is hard to offer advice on something as subjective as best of lists to be honest. I'd much rather see what you can come up with if you only had 75 min of album time for one compilation. You're allowed to take everything Maiden has done, including live versions from live albums or live b-sides etc as long as it is official. Now what would THAT look like? You could also play around with the track list, instead of making it chronologically (and rather boring) make an album that flows well...

Make it a double album if you must...Each CD around 75 mins.

Iron Maiden : Phantom of the Opera
Killers : Prodigal Son, Ghengis Khan
Number of the Beast : Children of the Damned, Hallowed be thy Name.
Piece of Mind : Where Eagles Dare, To Tame a Land
Powerslave : Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Somewhere in Time : Caught Somewhere in Time, Alexander the Great
Seventh Son : Infinite Dreams, Seventh Son
No Prayer for the Dying : No Prayer for the Dying
Fear of the Dark : Fear of the Dark, Childhood's End
Factor X : The Sign of the Cross, Fortunes of War
Virtual XI : The Clansman
Brave New World : Blood Brothers, The Nomad
Dance of Death : No More Lies
A Matter of Life and Death : For the Greater Good of God, Lord of Light
Final Frontier : When the Wild Wind Blows.

These are the songs I couldn't do without. I don't know the total running time, but I do consider all of them absolute masterpieces. If I had to pick up the 9,5-songs, I would need at least 6 CDs.
