For all who know how many AMOLAD songs are in the current setlist

I am one of the guys who knows how many new songs Maiden play in their current set. Still I don't know anything of the "classic" part of the setlist and I don't want to know that. I guess more people are in this "state". ;)

For this group I found a nice little interview with Nicko and also a short cool video clip.

I made sure this post contains NO SPOILERS, concerning the other songs involved in the set.

Let's keep it this way: no talk about songs from the first thirteen albums.

So don't read further if you don't want to know how many new songs Maiden play during this tour, and find out what Nicko has to say about it !!!!

IRON MAIDEN Drummer Defends Band's Decision To Play Entire New Album Live

A video clip of IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson ripping up the "Play Classics" sign that was thrown on stage by a member of the audience at the group's headlining show at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York on Thursday (Oct. 12) has been posted online at YouTube.com.

In a live interview with the "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM conducted on Friday (Oct. 13), IRON MAIDEN drummer Nicko McBrain defended the band's decision to play their new album, "A Matter of Life and Death", in its entirety on MAIDEN's current tour.

Said Nicko: "You're never gonna be able to please everybody all the time.

"When we finished recording this record — that was way back in March/April of this year — when Kevin [Shirley, producer] had finished putting everything together and we listened to the record from top to bottom, it's one of those moments where — we're not sure who said it — but it was one of those magical moments when everyone was like, 'We've gotta do this live.' More than likely it was Steve [Harris] that said something. Nobody knows who it was that came up with this idea of doing it, but it doesn't really matter, because we all were in agreement. And we went, 'This is too good. What do you leave off this record?' In the past, we've always done five or six songs off a 10- or 11-track album. And so you kind of normally had two-thirds of the record performed live — I mean, 'Dance of Death', we did six tracks off the album — but this is historically the first time we've EVER ventured into doing something like this.

"For me, my personal feeling, and it's very well documented, I'm sure, is that I think that this is the best album I've ever made with this band. So I was delighted — it was a challenge, it is a challenge every night to play these songs, because they're very intricate, there's a lot more progression… there's lots of reasons what makes, for me, this album to play live a challenge. But we decided to take the bull by the horns and say, 'Look, we're not really worried…' Because we knew — and believe me, we sat and we said, 'You know we're gonna get flak for this from a lot of our older fans and even some of the newer fans who wanna hear the older classic songs.' But this is the wonderful thing when you've got 14 records that are all magic that all have great songs on them. So, let's just say, there's an average of 10 songs [per album], there's 140 tunes to choose from over a wonderful career of 25-plus years. The older fans and newer fans all go, 'I wanna hear my favorite, I wanna hear this…' but to do this, it is bold, and we just decided, 'Look, this is what WE wanna do as a band.' And we took the decision, and we knew we were gonna get various amounts of flak for it. And to be honest with you, I wrote a little [tour] diary [entry] the other day and I stuck it on the site and I said, 'Look, for you guys out there, stop freakin' whining. Just come and enjoy it. This is what we're doing because this is what WE want to do.' And it's not about not doing what our fans want. Because our fans made this record No. 9 — it was a Top 10 album — we've never had a Top 10 album in America. So there's a lot of people who are very happy to hear this album in its entirety. There are gonna be the people that are whining and moaning and groaning about it… Well, too freakin' bad. You're gonna get what get.

Yeah i read about their decision for the setlist on a Trivium forum. (I wont ruin it for others...)

Was a bit miffed at first because it will be the first time i will see Maiden live this december. But as much as i love the classics, i think the new album is outstanding and il be psyched about seeing them whatever they play

Nicko is right - it's a fantastic album and if I had those damn tickets for Switzerand I'm sure I'd be enjoying it live :ok:

Their decision was great.  When I heard the rumors,  I didn't really expect them to be true,  but deep inside me I hoped they were.  Maiden know what they want,  and they do what they want!  No one can take it away :D

That's a great video.  I doubt that in any of the European legs of the tour people will be throwing such things onto the stage.

That was a great video. Screw the people who are unhappy with the setlist. In a few years, they'll all look back and realize what an amazing show they saw.

More than once Bruce said, that they wanna do new things, because there's so much more music inside of them, and that they don't want to play old classics all the time.
And personally, I'm looking forward to hearing the entire album live, simply because as Nicko said, all songs on it are great.
I completely support their decision, it's brave and inovative.

Some people want the moon a stick.  The last tour Maiden played was composed of nothing but classics, as the next tour will be.  They have countless videos of live 'classics', and have being playing classics for nearly 30 years.  I welcome the decision to play the whole album live (it was rumoured anyway, and I greeted it then)-it's different, and refreshing.  Okay, it may not leave room for other stuff, but so what?  It'll be a fantastic experience, and since the new album is so strong, I won't be complaining!

Anyway, Trivi-'We-compose-half-our-set-from-covers'-um may be able to appease the crowds.... :D

Another example of Bruce's passion! Good on him. As Raven stated, Maiden played classics before this tour, will play classics after this tour - what friggin' more do you want people?

I happend to love this new album I thinks it's awsome, I will enjoy every bit of it when I see them Oct. 21.
This is one band that will not be pushed around, and Bruce is just the man with the balls and voice to say it!!!! Maiden does whatever they want because they have earn that right! They haven't been around for 25 year for for nothing. They have put out new material ever since Maiden was born and have give us a tour with it. If people don't like the set list sell your tickets! there are true fans out there that love what the band is doing.

YOU GO BRUCE!!!!!!!!!!

As long as the songs are great, who give one iota if they're new or classics? Personally, I've seen them 3 times, I've heard the classics to death and am really looking forward to hearing AMOLAD in it's entirety. Imagine the guts of the band - not many of the songs on the album would be counted as the easier songs they've ever written (you musicians know that a lot better than I do, but it sounds complicated anyway) and the fact that some disgruntled fans want to hear Run to the hills for the umpteenth time...screw them. The band decides and I think it's a great and brave decision by a band that's really confident. And why shouldn't they be? After all, which songs would be taken out? Is it even possible for us in here to agree on 3 songs from the album that shouldn't be played? I don't think so.

Just a thought on Forostar's attempts to prevent any spoilers in this thread...well, since the 'playing of the whole album live' thing was a public rumour initially, the very fact that the topic is titled "For all who know how many AMOLAD songs are in the current setlist" may give a little bit away...just a thought. :innocent:

Hehe, the ones who know, they know. The ones who don't know and do not want to know, should not read anything here! ;)

If it's a rumor then it's ones own responsibilty to check this topic or not. Warnings enough, I'd say. ;)

Fair enough.  Besides, I don't think it'd be very surprising to anyone who knows nothing about the setlist to find out that the whole album is being played live...I was merely surprised that one of the many rumours about the new album came true! :innocent:

I am really happy to see that Iron Maiden didn't end up like Metallica: Releasing a poor album with only 2-3 songs above average, and gigs full of nostalgia songs. They themselves don't believe in and don't like their new songs. I don't understand how people can say "Mateallica changed, maturated and know how to please today's audience." If they did, can someone explain me why their pre-1991 songs still consist a crushing majority of their setlist? Same goes at a lesser extent to Megadeth.

I don't want to turn this post into a Iron Maiden vs. Metallica thing, I just wanted say that I totally support Iron Maiden in their decision to play the new album in its entirety. (Imo they could have dropped one or two songs in favor of BNW and DoD songs, but still) the fact that the majority of the setlist is AMOLAD songs, shows they still produce great and strong music, even if they don't sell as many albums as the bands I mentioned, and force the audience to dig the new album even more.

I also think that they shouldn't drop BNW and DoD songs so quickly. Wickerman, Ghost Of Navigator, Blood Brothers, Rainmaker, Dance Of Death should still be played, imo. I don't complain with the current setlist, but I think It would be better if they supported their latest albums as a package. because if you believe in the power of your latest album, you won't give it up after one tour, right?

I think it's not that they don't want to play the songs you mentioned, and stuff off the two previous albums- I think it's just that for this praticular tour, all they wanted to focus on was the new stuff. The classics I think were just... spacefillers, really. Fear not, I believe the setlists of the future will contain the new material and such, but just not as much as we've seen in past years when it was new.

But how can you choose some tracks to play out of SO many... Jesus.

Since the band seems to be more pleased with AMOLAD than many previous albums I suppose they choose to play the entire album and not that many classics - because the band didn't see a need for classics, they had 70 minutes of great songs to play. On the DOD/BNW tours, not every song on the respective albums were as strong so more classics were needed to fill out the time. At least that's one possible explanation. And for myself, since I saw them in 1984, 1985 and 2005, I don't feel it's necessary to see Run to the hills, the Trooper or some of the other songs yet again. I'm happy with their choice :)

I must admit to being a little dissapointed when i found out that Maiden were going to play the whole of AMOLAD.
Whilst this is a very brave option for the band to take and also a measure of how proud and excited the band clearly are about their new material ,i do feel that playing the whole album in the same running order is a bit excessive(if you want to hear an album straight through then stick it in the CD player). The main reason being that the album is very long over 70 minutes and this leaves very little time for some of the other wonderful material from the other 25 plus years of the bands existence.I thought the setlist for rock in rio and the dance of death tour had a great mix of old and new material and i am more than a bit dissapointed that the previous two albums material has been dropped already.I am hoping that by the time the tour reaches the UK that the band will have had a rethink although im sure they will still be brilliant as usual anyway.

I love the new album, and I loved it live. I'm not upset that they didn't play enough 'classics', per se, more so that they didn't seem to play as long as I expected. If any band has enough strong material to play 3+ hours it would be Iron Maiden. But I might be slightly biased, because I haven't seen them on previous tours; mind you, I just got my first (as in not borrowing my dad's) car in June, and almost all my money is going to student loans, so I haven't had the chance to see them before.

Of course, in the end, this is IRON MAIDEN we're talking about here. I'm thrilled just to see them at all! They could come out and do an a-capella version of the No Prayer For The Dying album and I wouldn't go home unhappy.

In saying that, you may find yourself the only member of the audience left - should the above ever happen. ;)

But the loyalty is commendable. :)
