Trooper
The idea? Just like LC's "Daily Song" thread but...

...instead of daily, it's semi-weekly/twice a week (yeah it's inconsistent with the thread title but AotW just works better than "album of the semi-week" lol)
...instead of songs, it's for albums
...instead of Iron Maiden, it's for everything except Iron Maiden (mostly going to be heavy metal and hard rock type of albums) and album suggestions are more than welcome ;)

Tally:
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971) = 4.375 stars out of 12 ratings
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970) = 4.25 stars out of 14 ratings

Current Album: The Who - Who's Next (1971)
1. Baba O'Riley
2. Bargain
3. Love Ain't for Keeping
4. My Wife
5. The Song Is Over
6. Getting in Tune
7. Going Mobile
8. Behind Blue Eyes
9. Won't Get Fooled Again

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

5.
Anything with Stairway on it gets 5 stars, no matter what else is on the record.

Still, the other songs are really great. If it wasn't for Stairway, it would've been as good as ther previous 3.

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

Personally, I enjoy Levee more than Stairway. I gave the album 4 stars.

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

Good idea.

This one has never quite been my favourite Led Zeppelin album, though I can't exactly put my finger on the reason why. Granted, it's a great album, with timeless classics and some of my favourite songs of the band - Battle of Evermore, Going to California, When the Levee Breaks and, I'll admit it, Stairway. But overall, it sort of lacks the authenticity of the previous albums, and for the most part, it fails to recapture the mystic atmosphere of the third album. Or let's say, it tries a little too hard, hence it is a little too mystical, and a bit artificial. Like Led Zeppelin III captured the fog on a Welsh lake on an autumn morning, while Led Zeppelin IV is more like stage fog. This may sound a little harsh, and I don't mean to say I don't like the album. I like it a lot. And I certainly appreciate it for what it was back when it was released- a quantum leap in rock music. A solid four stars from me, despite some people thinking this to be blasphemic.

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

Great idea val! have a praise.

4.5 stars.

Four Sticks is the only disappointment here. All other songs are legendary. My fave Zep album!

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

Variety, creativity, power, great songwriting, fine performances and production — not much to cut up here.
Still, I gotta rate this one like the Trooper: it was a 10, should still be a 10, but it inspires more respect than passion from me.
So, 4.5 stars,

...and another good thread, Val.

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

5 stars, easily. The album is really a classic from top to bottom. I won't even mention the worldwide known anthems of the album, but the insane groove and tempo of Four Sticks and the ultra heavy and pounding epic When The Levee Breaks, both which are still pretty much overlooked by listeners, even old timers. Fantastic! If there's an album that can be called classic with no filler at all is this timeless work of art!

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

This is a very good album, and possibly one - if not the - best albums by Led Zep. However, I'm pretty much sick to death of Stairway to Heaven, sorry, and I would listen to any other song on this album aside from that.

I would say that best track on this is The Battle of Evermore*. 9/10.

* When ever I hear Loosing my Religion by REM it always reminds me of this track.

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

3.5 This is my least favorite Led Zep album. The songs are great but something is missing from the other albums

Re: Album of the Week #1: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)

Moving to the next album tomorrow. Anyone who wants to get their ratings in may still do so for 1 more day :)

Well, yes.

But the big difference with LC's threads is that not he but Maiden "decides" the tracks and here, you decide the albums.
Is it possible that (just like with SMX's survivors) others will also be able to make album suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Album of the Week #2: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)

Suggestions are more than welcome. Although I wouldn't know how to decide which suggestions get through and which don't. I'd prefer putting it to a vote/poll, but obviously I can't anymore since the poll area is already dedicated to the album rating.

To reiterate though, suggestions are more than welcome. Only if we could decide on a system to know which suggestions should be accepted.

In any case, I updated the OP to include a section listing what albums I plan to do next.

Oh, and AotW #2 is up for voting!

Re: Album of the Week #2: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)

3. I don't really like Sabbath. I REALLY like the awesome sogns like Paranoid and Iron Man, but other songs by them don't really do it for me.

Some oter songs are Children of the Grave and Symptom of the Universe.

Re: Album of the Week #2: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)

A true birth of heavy metal for me, a metal essential.

5/5 stars!

Re: Album of the Week #2: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)

It is a metal essential because it was a groundbreaking album.
Unlike the mighty Zep, however, early Sabbath also sounds pretty dated.
War Pigs, Iron Man and Paranoid  :edmetal:
Chances of me listening to it all the way through  :S
I give it much respect, but little love. 3.5 stars

Re: Album of the Week #2: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)

3 songs on the album that I really like, but the rest are forgettable.  It gets 4.5 stars for its role in the history of heavy metal.

Re: Album of the Week #2: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)

5+ Incredible from start to finish. The so called "classics" that the mainstream have latched on to are some of the weakest in their catalog.

Re: Album of the Week #2: Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)

Protometal. Some classic songs, some forgettable songs.

I wouldn't be too bureaucratic in that.  :)

I understand this as either every suggestion gets accepted or the decision is solely mine. In any case, I'm open to suggestions.
